Free Cantrips

Rules As Written

Druidcraft, Prestidigitation, and Thaumaturgy are cantrips that can be selected by various classes.

House Rule

If you have Druidcraft, Prestidigitation, or Thaumaturgy on your class spell list, you get that cantrip for free. It does not count against the number of cantrips known. It cannot be swapped later for a different cantrip.

This applies to multiclassed characters. If a character already has the cantrip via some other source (for example, a racial trait) they do not gain another cantrip. The features do not stack.

At the time this rule is instituted, any existing character that chose these cantrips as one of their cantrips known may immediately gain another cantrip.

Rationalization/Reason for the Rule

These cantrips are filled with flavor but often get passed over for more practical cantrips given the small number of cantrip slots characters are allowed, since they have little mechanical benefit. Therefore, including them as freebies gives each spellcaster a bag of tricks that they can perform to show off their magical skills without unduly buffing any character.
