Dear Diary,
Hey ya'll, it's me, Charles. We'll, that's what I find I call myself, but now when I was growing up
in the small town of Red Larch, all the other folks, they liked to call me Satan. Except Momma
of course; she used to always say: "Oliver Charles Gainsborough, you get your tail over here
right this instant". But my friends nowadays call me Char, on account of my burnt skin flesh and
horribly disfigured appearance, which I wear a mask for. Don't want to scare the children.
See, my family worships the god of sun and law, (you can imagine the importance of well to do
sons in law), Amaunator (Praise the Sun!), and one morning my momma was praying and she
came to me saying that I was sinning and needed to be punished. I agreed, so she and her
extended family gathered outside for a cleansing barbeque (it was nice and sunny out that day),
and they tied me up to the pit so they could burn away all my sins. It was something awful hot
that day, and I couldn't wait for the clouds to clear so they could get on with the ritual (you had
to do the ritual in full sight of the sun, no cloud cover at all). Finally they lit the fire, and as I
awaited for my sins to be vanquished in the sweet release of death, it started raining, with no
clouds, if you can believe it.
A miracle! My sins were burned away, and our gracious Lord Amaunator gifted me with the
magical powers of fire and healing. I can go and burn away other people's sins too! Best day
ever!
Eventually Momma said I had to leave Red Larch, I guess the other family wasn't very
supportive about my new powers, so I left for Triboar, where I became part of their City Watch!
Man, it was the best; they gave me my own badge, club, and everything! But now I'm off to new
adventure; I heard tale of Waterdeep, City of Splendor, where some of the people in their
government wear masks just like me. It's my hope and aspiration that I too, one day, will
become a Masked Lord of Waterdeep, just like the big dogs.
For now though, I'm headed to Red Larch to see Momma one more time before I head out on
my next grand adventure.
Praise the Sun!
Char
