SKT: Session 12: Surviving Guh's hunger

General Summary

Chapter the 12th: The Tides of Battle, the Weight of Giants

Fate's cruel hand held no mercy within the foul den of Grudd Haug, where the stench of gluttony mingled with the scent of battle. The clash had already begun—Madra, caught in the wretched tendrils of an Otyugh, dangled between life and death, while Slub, a Hill Giant of immense and dim-witted cruelty, prepared to strike once more. Yet the party fought with valor; Azure, ever the tactician, split the battlefield with an unholy chasm of writhing void—his Hunger of Hadar tearing at mind and flesh alike. Uvar, invoking the Father’s might, wove divine light into flesh, binding wounds before they could claim his allies.   For a time, the plan held. The giants, blind and flailing, stumbled through the starless abyss, and the party’s relentless coordination held the tide at bay. But cracks began to form. The goblins, shrill and insidious, nipped at the edges of their concentration, seeking to unravel the fragile threads of Beacon of Hope, Haste, and Hunger of Hadar that kept their strategy intact. Madra and Thyme, battered and bleeding, walked the razor’s edge of mortality. Yet they endured, felling those who stood before them.   But then—rumblings beyond the void. The wet smacking of gluttonous consumption. The growls of unseen wolves. More awaited in the darkness.   With the battle’s pause, a plan was forged. Thyme, swift as the storm, would descend to retrieve Madra’s greataxe, the weapon that had been wrenched from his grasp when unconsciousness had claimed him. The others would take position, bracing for what lay beyond the black veil. Their calculations estimated three giants, a scattering of ogres, wolves, and the bloated monstrosity that was Chief Guh herself. Yet, when the spell collapsed and The Abyss unfurled its secrets, reality was far crueler.   A sea of foes awaited them. Not three, but many hill giants. Not some, but countless orcs. Wolves, ogres, goblins—all poised to unleash their wrath upon the weary adventurers. A storm of rock and javelin, of arrow and boulder, rained down, battering them in a relentless barrage. The line buckled, but it did not break. Thyme and Madra pushed forward—until more giants emerged from the gloom.   Then, the inevitable.   A boulder struck true, sending Thyme crumbling to the ground. Madra, defiant even as his vision darkened, fell soon after, brought low by the strength of another giant’s crushing blow. The party saw the writing on the wall. To stand was to die.   And so, with bloodied limbs and battered pride, they turned. They ran.   Even the bravest must know when to fight—and when to flee.

"A warrior’s worth is not measured by how long they stand, but by how wisely they choose to fall."
