Qarla DiNovo

Qarla DiNovo is a journalist and editor-in-chief of the Publick Occurrences newspaper in Boston, within The Commonwealth.
Qarla is the daughter of Piper Wright, a journalist and founder of Publick Occurences, and Nate DiNovo, a local hero known as the Sole Survivor. Piper and Nate became a couple during the tumultuous events of 2287, when The Institute emerged from their secret underground lair on a campaign of conquest and domination. Nate led a group of heroes in the destruction of The Institute, obliterating their organization by overloading their nuclear generators. The Institute's entire facility, including its unique Synth construction facilities were vaporized and buried under hundreds of feet of soil. Piper became pregnant soon after, while the Minutemen and the Railroad were working together to rebuild the Boston area under Nate's direction. Months later, Nate was approached by a family whose daughter had run away to a Synth colony in Far Harbor, Maine. Nate left his pregnant partner behind and traveled by boat to investigate. He died at Far Harbor. The details of his demise have never been revealed to the public.
Piper gave birth to Qarla while The Commonwealth was in chaos. The loss of the Sole Survivor was a terrible blow to the young nation and the lack of leadership threatened to tear it all apart. Piper focused on her newspaper, shifting her role to editor-in-chief and hiring a team of journalists. Qarla grew up in the newsroom, working closely with her mother and her aunt Natalie. Natalie eventually left the paper, marrying a local man and becoming a career politician. In 2310, Natalie was elected President of The Commonwealth and then re-elected in 2314. President Kowalski-Wright enjoys wide popularity, but has often been criticized for her Boston-focused legislation.
In 2316, Qarla's mother Piper was interviewing a veteran of the Minutemen's action in Far Harbor. This soldier's story had inconsistencies about Nate DiNovo's death. Piper, always a journalist at heart, traveled to Far Harbor to investigate. It was later publicly confirmed by many witnesses that Piper was seen arriving in Far Harbor spent some time there, and boarded a ship to return to Boston. But that ship never arrived. Qarla was worried for her mother and approached her Aunt Natalie, requesting that Nat use her presidential powers to investigate. Natalie refused, remarking that her sister Piper was either lost at sea beyond recovery, or could take care of herself better than anyone. Qarla was upset and left Boston to continue working on the story.
After months of research, Qarla found no leads. She shifted her focus to other parts of the wasteland, traveling on an old motorcycle. When she heard that St. Louis had been attacked, she gave up looking for her mother and started investigating the St. Louis Attck. This led to her following The Heroes of St. Louis to Gravestone. Qarla approached the party, suspicious that they might be responsible for the destruction of St. Louis. (SESSION 10: OLD FLAMES AND LOOSE JUICE).
The group came across Qarla again in the village of Emancipation (SESSION 15: RISING TENSIONS). She was traveling back to Boston and only stopping to get a meal. The Heroes of St. Louis enjoyed a beer with her and she explained the story of her parents adventures. Mouse revealed that he might be a Synth, which Qarla rejected the idea of. Mouse was clearly too young to be a Synth, as The Institute's Synth manufacturing facilities had been destroyed by her parents thirty years before. Qarla, feeling that she could now trust the group, told them about her mother's disappearance and her father's unexplained death at Far Harbor.
A few days later, the Heroes of St. Louis were traveling through Quincy, Illinois when they discovered Qarla in the local jail (SESSION 19: THE HORROR AT MACDOUGAL CAVE.) Investigating her case, the group uncovered an elaborate set-up. Qarla had been framed, someone using a Gen 3 Synth body to do it. This Gen 3 was clearly new, having been manufactured only a few weeks before. Worse yet, Mouse might have been involved, placing the Synth body while in one of his fugue states. Qarla was shocked and horrified. She told Mouse that if he was a Gen 3 Synth he would have both a verbal command code and a command radio signal which could turn him into someone's puppet. He needed to travel to Boston, where the runaway Synths of The Railroad would be able to help him. The heroes broke Qarla out of jail and she road away on her motorcycle, headed back to Boston.
