Queen Annvesiene Calera I

Queen Annvesiene Sophia Calera (a.k.a. Ann)

Queen Annvesiene Calera was the reigning queen of Naea from 1107 AV to 1153. Though she did not take residence in Ellera, like her predecessors and descendants, instead she decided to reign in Westmarch, Shenar. Though her reign began not long after the turbulent The Hundred Year War , she quickly proved herself brilliant in the field of commerce, pulling the country out of the poverty following the war through newly-created trade routes that still stand to this very day.

Personal history

Annvesiene Sophia Calera was born to her parents Sebastian Calera and Carlisia Endryll (the reigning king and queen of the time), both of which were reviled by the people for their inability to provide any amount of help during the Hundred Years War. Because of this, Ann had to prove herself to the people once she reached maturity, and became apparent that she would inherit the throne - after all, she had no siblings. She quickly proved that she had much more understanding of the overall impacts of the war than her parents did, and the people quickly grew to love and appreciate the young princess, who would just years later become queen. The people threw a mild revolt, giving the king and queen an ultimatum to place their daughter at the throne, or die horribly. The pair reluctantly agreed, and allowed their daughter to reign over Naea. Just weeks after her coronation, she mobilized dozens of merchants, traders, and other commerce-driven people to Ellera to discuss creating trade routes with nearby nations.

Sexuality

Heterosexual

Education

Ann Calera had many tutors at her childhood manor, many of which were professors at Westmarch University just a short walk away. Through these tutors, she learned how to deliver speeches, the importance of trade on the nation's economy, and the sciences. Queen Ann Calera often said that her other favorite subject was fiction, which is most evident in her appreciation for plays and opera.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Queen Ann Calera's greatest achievement was creating the "Triad Trade Route", an oceanic trade route between Naea, Telondra, and Arlyia. Later on this would also extend to Arcadia, but keep it's three-pointed name. This trade route fostered both a peace between the three initial nations, wary at the beginning due to their opposition during the Hundred Years War, as well as introducing new technologies to the nations, new crops, and creating a much stronger bond between the leaders of the nations. This trade route has lasted over one hundred years, and is quickly approaching its 150th anniversary.

Failures & Embarrassments

While she was a brilliant commercial leader, Queen Ann Calera was inept when it came to architecture and expansion of her own country. Many felt smothered in their overpopulated towns and cities during the merchant explosion of the early 1100s, by the time she was in her fifties, her people were begging to found new townships near the cities of Westmarch, Rachelsborough and Northpoint. Thankfully, she did eventually agree to the expansion, at the cost of many believing it was too late.

Mental Trauma

Much like her mother before her, Queen Calera often went into deep depressions. Though it remains a mystery exactly why these happened, historians suggest that it may be due to her infertility, as she never had a child.

Intellectual Characteristics

Logical, Peaceful, Philosophical, Inquisitive, Philanthropic

Morality & Philosophy

Queen Ann believed that her people came before her, and as such, her money was the people's money. If they suffered, she suffered. If they were poor, she was poor.

Taboos

Though considered very open-minded, Ann Calera was secretly racist, especially so to her Draconic neighbors in Plenn, Lahas, and Iolas. Several people wanted her to expand the Triad trade routes to those three locations, but she refused vehemently each time it was brought up.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Place Naea among the great nations of Folterra, encouraging education and mercantilism.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Exceptional with commerce, horribly inept understanding how architecture works.

Likes & Dislikes

Likes: emeralds, gardening, the color violet, intellectual discussions, poetry, art   Dislikes: Drakkon, Megeri, ignorance, greenbulb fruit, candle wax, seasickness (her own)

Virtues & Personality perks

Surprisingly, Ann Calera was quite open-minded when it came to discussions on topics like religion and spirituality. Additionally, she encouraged people to learn the sciences; though it was one of her lesser-favorite subject to learn, she thought it was one of the most important ones to know.

Vices & Personality flaws

Though many claimed her to be greedy, she never proved that she was, with one exception. Her known love for emeralds made her an overzealous collector of the gemstones, often draining her wealth for the sake of having a new addition.

Social

Religious Views

She had firm beliefs in the teachings of the The Keepers of the Three, though was comfortable entertaining ideas of other deities.

Social Aptitude

Charismatic and very extroverted. She always looked at others with the same respect that she would have shared with her family.

Hobbies & Pets

Though she had a small menagerie of pets (most notably birds) throughout her reign, some of her favorites were a large sled dog named Walhart (also beloved by the people), a snow owl, and a lap cat that she raised after Walhart's death.

Wealth & Financial state

Though extremely affluent, Queen Ann Calera only kept about 20% of the earnings from the trade routes to herself. Through this money, she bought pets, added to her gemstone collection, and bought clothing. Despite her spending, at the end of her reign, her treasury remained quite large.

Quotes & Catchphrases
"... I cannot stand the monarchs of our kingdom's past who stood idle, filling their coffers with the bones of those who worked underneath them. A king or queen is much like a flower in a field - it needs the work of others to keep itself alive and in good health, while that flower gives back to those that help it. As such, I give all I have to you, my people." - 10th anniversary of Ann Calera's Reign (February 3rd, 1117 AV)   "Education is the forefront of any strong nation. A nation full of fools is just as strong as a sandcastle before the tides." - Unknown interview   "Should I go to bed and never wake, my only wish is to remain in the people's hearts, even if some nonsensical scandal arises in historian's tales of our kingdom some eighty or more years from now." - Calera's last interview, two months before she passed away (July 19th, 1153AV).
