Earth Mimics

Earth Mimics are lesser elementals which mimic neighboring minerals. They consume minerals they come into contact with, adding them to their bodies. True to their name, their appearance varies to replicate those minerals. Earth mimics are picky eaters, and have an innate taste for rarer minerals, like metals, precious metals, and jewels. For this reason, Earth Mimics are valued in mining operations for their ability to sniff out and refine ore. Care must be taken while handling them, however, for they are often drawn to equipment worn by humanoids, and when particularly starved, even the metals within their bodies. Creatures disinclined towards using metal equipment such as druids and gullfolk sometimes keep them as pets, where they are valued for their ability to destroy unwanted equipment and create burrows in hard stone.   Earth Mimics vary in size, composition, and abilities. Some are large enough to become the landscape, while some are small and concentrated, like a single diamond. For this reason, they can be represented by a variety of descriptors.

False Appearance. While the Earth Mimic remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from naturally-occurring minerals.   Absorb Mineral. Any nonmagical weapon made of metal or another mineral rarer than the mimic's composition is absorbed. After dealing damage, the weapon takes a permanent and cumulative -1 penalty to damage rolls. If its penalty drops to -5, the weapon is destroyed. Nonmagical ammunition made of metal or another mineral rarer than the mimic's composition is destroyed after dealing damage. The mimic can eat through 2-inch-thick, nonmagical metals or minerals in 1 round. After absorbing material in this way, the Earth Mimic's armor class increases until it matches that of the material. When it does so, it may change and become another type of Earth Mimic, represented by another statblock.   Mineral Detection. The Earth Mimic knows the mineral composition of all material within 15 feet of it.

Actions

Hungry Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit 1d20+3 , reach 5ft., one target. Hit: (2d6+2) 2d6+2 bludgeoning damage plus (1d6) 1d6 acid damage. If the target is wearing nonmagical armor made of metal or another mineral rarer than the mimic's composition, its armor is partly corroded and takes a permanent and cumulative -1 penalty to the AC it offers. The armor is destroyed if the penalty reduces its AC to 10. After absorbing material in this way, the Earth Mimic's armor class increases until it matches that of the material. When it does so, it may change and become another type of Earth Mimic, represented by another statblock.
