Canto, the City of Night

OVERVIEW

Located in Tilithre, close the the border of the Alfloriin Woodlands, Canto is what would be considered 'the Party City of Exalia'. Once a respectable elven city, it is now a haven for hedonism and debauchery, for better or worse. The God of the Night, Mordecai, is said to reside there in the form of a mortal avatar.

HISTORY

Pre Revolution

Formerly located in the Alfloriin Woodlands, Canto was considered a highly desirable and beautiful elven city, boasting how impressive elvish architecture can be. As its popularity and splendour grew, so did a seedy underbelly, where locals and visitors alike could satisfy their more base whims. This underbelly was named the Night District, comprised of bars, brothels, gambling dens, and other such establishments encouraging quick thrills and relaxed morals. The Night District was looked down upon by the city's authorities, and subsequently restrictions and high tax rates were placed upon the buisinesses operating there, to discourage their existence. They continued to thrive however, and so authorities found it easier to silently tolerate the district due to the boon it gave to the city's economy.

The Anti Debauchery Law

When it became apparent that the Night District was becoming the main draw of visitors to Canto, the authorities decided that they would no longer tolerate what they considered a terrible flaw within their city. A new anti-debauchery law was passed, outlawing any drug use, gambling or prostitution, and a strict curfew was placed. Law enforcers were sent en masse to the District in order to arrest any who may be breaking the new rules, and they forced their way into establishments to inspect if they were operating in secret. Those who were found to be acting illegally were treated with great violence, as an example to any others who may choose to risk violating the law.

Mordecai and the Sunset Revolution

A popular brothel in the Night District came to be one such victim of the law enforcers scrutiny, but the owner of the establishment, Mordecai Lerran, led his employees and patrons to fight back against those who intended to apprehend them. He encouraged other establishments to do the same, and in doing so started what would later be known as the Sunset Revolution. The establishments were succesful in fending off attacks from Canto lawmakers, which escalated the authorities attempts to thwart the district into a downright war between the city and its own dark underbelly. The power of the Night District was more considerable than the authorities had predicted, however. Mordecai's charisma appealed to the secret patrons of the District who lived within the city, and urged them to stand by what they valued; the right to enjoy themselves. Support grew, as did the influence of the district itself, until the Night 'district' was no longer a district, but had essentially become the majority of the city. The authorities would call for aid from allies outside of the city to crush the rebellion, but any invaders only found themselves caught up in the charm and delights that Mordecai had to offer, with a technique he referred to as 'giving them the ol' razzle dazzle'. It is said even some Gods found themselves caught up in the city's delights, though this is unconfirmed.   Through liquour, bawdiness and sometimes when necessary blood, the city was overtaken, and Mordecai became its new ruler.

Canto reborn as the City of Night

Those who refused to accept the city for what it had become fled. Canto became something considered a stain on the Alfloriin Woodlands, and as all attempts to bring it to heel with traditional Elven values had failed, it was decided that the city was better not being part of the Woodlands at all. The border was change to eclude the city, and it is now considered a part of Tilithre. Canto came to be known as the City of Night, and has flourished as a popular tourist destination.

MORDECAI'S DEATH AND DEIFICATION

It is unclear what led to Mordecai's death, as anyone who could have made an account was intoxicated at the time of it happening. It is assumed that his death was caused by an incident of overindulgence. Upon his death he was deified, and became the God of the Nightlife. It is said that he has been using his new Godly state to continue to reside in the city that he helped to mold, and enjoy the delights it has to offer.
