Balepreu Species in Fiven Chronicles | World Anvil

Balepreu

One of the more common amphibians in the Balelands region. It's recognizable by its straw-colored underbelly and looping stripes of tan that resemble twine used to tie redgrass or hay bales.

Basic Information

Anatomy

A baleperu is a squat amphibian with a smooth, almost leathery skin with a twin line of bumps or ridges that line either side of its spine. It has an internal skeleton and always has a dark brown skin coloration along the top of its body. This is broken by the rope-like stripes that help give it its name.   It has four limps, two smaller ones in the front and two larger ones in the back. The rear legs are primarily used for locomotion which it does by hopping and leaping.

Ecology and Habitats

Baleperu prefer northern forests, such as in the Balelands region. They stay near bodies of water and damp areas. This often puts them in close proximity with loam leopards, who prey on the baleperu.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Baleperu subsist primarily on insects and sherpi flowers.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The animal's sense of smell is muted as is its sense of taste. It 'hears' vibrations more than sound and in normal situations, it is nearsighted. The exception is when it observes something in motion, then it lowers an inner eyelid which acts as a corrective lens that allows the baleperu to track moving objects, such as insects, to a great degree.
