Drowning Coast

In the Northeast corner of the continent, a massive section of land has turned into a swamp. It covers about one-fifth of the total area of the continent. It is a large wetland with various-sized lakes covering the majority of it. These lakes go all the way down to the sea floor. The area isn't flooding; instead, the land is withering into the sea, and parts of it have broken off to become islands. The strange phenomena of this area have led to frequent natural disasters. Due to the increased humidity of the area, there is a near-constant monsoon-like storm engulfing the area. In the summer months, the rain turns to orange-sized hail, which chips away the land more, creating an endless cycle.

Geography

It used to be vast plains used for farm land in the distant past, but as the land has crumbled away, it has truned into a mash or swampland, with lakes covering almost the entire surface.

Ecosystem

Very few plants or animals can survive in this environment. There are large trees that float in the lakes. Their roots cast a large net under them which collects some of the soil that breaks off. They consume the nutrients from the dirt and let it go. The roots are also used to catch fish that swim by and use them for nutrients as well. These trees' predatory behavior have given them the name: Angler Oaks. There is a species of bird that east the leaves of the Angler Oak, and makes its home deep inside the thick bark to avoid the storms. Sometimes they swim under the water to steal the fish from the roots as well.

Ecosystem Cycles

In the winter the rain turns to a blizzard making it almost impossible for any creature to step outside its home. The Oaks lose theire leaves so the birds stock up in the warmer months so they can stay in their nests where its warm.

Localized Phenomena

Near-constant storms, flooding, earth falling into the sea.

Natural Resources

The wood of the Angler Oak would be valuable for building since it is sturdy and naturally insulated, but the risk of traveling to the Drowning Coast is too much.

Tourism

There is a single organisation that does tours around the Drowning Coast. They take a boat and go along the edge, so no one steps foot on the sparce ground. The only people who go are those in the upper class who want to see the strange land. It is a very lucrative buisness. They specially engineered their boat out of metal, which is uncommon, so it can withstand the storms. They also used a special enameled glass to allow the passengers to see outside the boat from the viewing area. No one else has figured out how to do this.
