A human mage on the southern continent was a member of the south elven nation. He was obsessed with long life because of his envy of the elves
His envy led to experimentation with the magics of death and life. Between multiple arcane rituals he was able to extend his life much longer than any thought previously possible. None realized his feeding upon the souls of others at that time.
Eventually his age became to great to believe and he was cast out from his position. However shortly thereafter the sundering of the gods occurred and he found himself closeby to the occurance. It came to his attention that there had become a tear in the path of souls, and he saw that souls were leaking through. He found a way to siphon these souls off for himself.
In addition to raising husks he was able to reattach souls to bodies. However something was missing. A connection that defined the difference between living and undead. The souls would decay as they were reattached. The mage soon began to have those to whom he had reattached souls feed off of others. This initially worked. However he soon found these Vampires had their souls poisoned in the process. He additionally found he was able to imprint a flash or shadow of a soul upon it's former body. Giving them many of the memories and a somewhat similar personality, but lacking the intrinsic aspects of life. Indeed despite all of his experimentation he was unable to reconnect the soul properly to the body. After centuries of work his soul had become so rotted and poisoned it no longer had a reasonable hold over his body. What was left was the first lich. He no longer cared for his goal of returning life. He simply wished to increase the power he possessed and achieve godhood. Which eventually he would....
