Pagenied

Pagenied, or Pago—as called by the locals, is a central swath of savanna crawling across the mainland. While the higher, brown-grassed steppes are dry and adverse to life, the river-cut valley of Pagoenied is a farming paradise where crops grow lush and abundant. The area suffers a wet and dry season, although the large river provides nutrient-rich silt along its flooding riverbanks that allows for farmers to prosper regardless of the season.

Geography

The golden-grassed valley is cut through by a large, winding river known as the Greine. The area is decorated with gently-rolling hills and white-stoned cliff faces. A few groves of old trees speckle the land, ones that have learned to endure the occasional wildfire. The northern edge of Pagenied gives way to a desert at the foot of the high plateau of Motasicre, the land becoming drier and less hospitable.

Fauna & Flora

Most of the savanna is rife with tall-growing golden-green grass, although it is interspaced by prickly bushes and thick-barked trees such as olive and acacia trees. Wildflowers paint the landscape in the wet season, and the dry season brings with it annual ground covers and sedge that heal the land after wildfires and droughts. Animal life is made up of many small prey creatures such as songbirds and rodents. Snakes are abundant on the plains, although they are seldom welcome when seen. Large predators are reserved to great gray bears and hound-sized golden cats. Smaller predators such as birds of prey and wandering packs of small wolves are more common.

Natural Resources

Pageneid is rich in grains, grapes, olives, and corn in terms of crops. Along the riverbank, rice is grown, although its seasonality is fickle. Goats and feral cattle and horses are the primary livestock, although there is an insurgence of game birds being kept and farmed for meat and eggs. From the earth, marble and iron are abundant. Fossil remains and small gemstones can be found in the Greines. A few rare spices can be found in the outer hills and are fiercely guarded by the landowners.
