Waystones and Keystones
Waystones, also known as Greystones, Standing Stones or Leystones, are stones along the road and in the wilderness throughout Fiore. Waystones are usually over a dozen feet tall, with the stone in the center of the circle usually the tallest. They are said to mark old roads and safe roads and are known to travelers as a symbol for good luck. They have a certain air of mystery about them now and are places of reverence for devoted followers of Vanderan.
Remnants from the Second Age, waystones allowed the transportation of people over great distances in moments. The creation and use of waystones was a gift given by Vanderan, and that knowledge was lost after the end of the age. Waystones function by being built in line with and by accessing the leylines of the planet. Because of this, a waystone can only transport somebody to another waystone on the same planet. A keystone is used to activate the waystone, and requires some ability to access the weave in order to use it. Once activated, the waystone pulls the traveling party into the leyline, allowing near instantaneous travel to another waystone. In order to travel to a waystone, the person using the keystone, called the navigator, must be familiar with the destination waystone and area around it. This familiarity usually requires at least an hour spent familiarizing oneself with the area immediately surrounding the destination waystone.
A keystone is a fist sized piece of seemingly normal looking chiseled stone with The Endless Path, Vanderan's holy symbol, etched into it. By holding a keystone one can visualize and remember the location they wish to travel to while touching the central stone and then channel some transmutation magic of third level or higher into the keystone, activating the waystone and causing it to convert any within a ten-foot radius into pure magic and transport them through the leyline to the destination, where they are then reassembled. This transfers all items worn and carried but will not transport non-living things such as wagons or carts.
The central stone is always the one used in transportation, while the surrounding concentric stones both mark out the area affected and seem to be used in the channeling process.
