Naming Traditions

Family names

Most Nazali consider their entire clan or tribe their family. Therefore a nazali family name is typically the name of the elder or chief they were born under. Though few ever give out such names, it's a way of identifying when one was born, and to what clan they belong.

Other names

Most Nazali have a "child name" which is the name they are given by their parents. It is usually a simple or short name that is used until their coming of age rite. When they complete this rite, then they will typically give a new name that has been chosen by the religious leader of the tribe. Such names are typically gender neutral and related to some event or natural phenomena.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

Nazali have a conservative society that expects strong warrior males, and caring, empathetic women. They are intouch with the natural world and have tried to move forward, despite their fiendish ties, in order to build a life of growth and peace. They are hunters and gatherers in the dense rainforest of Athos, traveling between civilizations or setting up small villages.

Common Etiquette rules

It is considered rude to disrespect elders, or the men of your family. Additionally, men showing immense emotion or vulnerability is considered weak and improper as if they are not capable of maintaining their responsibilities. In most situations from dinning, to ceremonies, and titles, there is an order of respect that is given.

Common Dress code

Nazali use a lot of natural fabrics with men often using muted earthy colors, while women will be more decorative in the colors they wear. They make use of a lot of bone and beads with bright colored dyes, as well as a variety of talismen and relics of nature crafting.

Art & Architecture

Nazali have simple home structures that blend in with the surrounding environment, making permanent communities hard to find and map out. Many Nazali homes are similar to that of wood elves, with rising and winding platforms, bridges, and tree houses. However, they tend to have more squat homes, with less elegant architecture, favorint sturdy and spacious qualities.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Nazali have diverse tastes and prefer a variety of foods. Because they travel frequently, they often find ways to preserve food on the road and have developed a culture of pickling and canning many things. From pickled eggs, bug jams, and canned mushrooms. Many find their food tastes repulsive while others consider it a delicacy to add as sides and toppings to traditional meals.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

Children are often born with the aid of a wisdom who not only helps the mother medically, but performs a "spirit rite" with the child upon their entrance into the world. It is a secretive and careful ritual that they believe prevents the child from corrupting influences of fiends, fey, or spirits of any sort. Because of high mortality rates and reclusivity of their culture, children are not considered "people" until the age of 5, and are kept mostly private among close family and friends. It's rare for anyone to see a child they are not familiar with under the age of 5.

Coming of Age Rites

When a child starts to develop their tusks around age 12, they begin to take on more responsibilities and expectations as adults. Any time after this, they can chose to perform their coming of age rite. For Nazali, this rite involves an intense ritual lead by the Wisdom, which involves them taking on a voluntary possession which they must overcome and defeat themselves. This is symbolic of their consent goal to rise above the curse of their people. There is debate from outside cultures on whether the possession is real, or manifestation of the psychoactive herbs taken prior to the ceremony.

Funerary and Memorial customs

When a member of their culture dies, they typically bury them at the roots of the great trees and have the Wisdom or druids cover there body with plant life to begin the decomposition early. It is a private affair typically with small offerings left.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Nazali, despite having lost almost all fey ancestry, still maintain some traditions like that of elves. They prefer long ears with women often having long hair with many adornments. Men typically have longer or larger tusks and will shave parts of their head as symbols of status. Nazali often have many piercings or tattoos as a form of self adornment, and some even partake in ritual scarring as a show of strength.

Gender Ideals

Men are expected to be strong and stoic leaders of their people and are often martial hunters and chiefs. Women are often caregivers and spiritual leaders engaging in druidic aspects. Nazali consider most magic to be feminine, and martial fighting to be masculine. They all work together to meet the needs of the tribe and while there isn't a large negative stigma against someone who doesn't fit within the gender norms, it is still considered uncommon. A tribe will typically have a male leader that is in charge of caring for the tribe and making decisions (the Chief) and a female leader that is charge of the spiritual and mental health of the tribe, dealing with medicine and rituals as well (called the Wisdom).

Courtship Ideals

Nazali encourage the creation of children as their dangerous lifestyles and high mortality rates need many children for any sort of population growth. Because of that, marriage is often seen as part of becoming an adult and an expectation. People quickly encourage unwed people to pair up and have children. Because of this, arranged marriages among the younger people are very common. When parents wish for their children to be married, or when two individuals chose to get married, they approach the Wisdom of the tribe, who is often a priestess, shaman, or druid. This person will determine if they can marry or not, and will complete a bonding ceremony if she approves. This is usually done via a small ceremony and ritual that leads to an after celebration with the tribe.

Relationship Ideals

Within the tribe, men typically have more say in decisions that affect the house or tribe, as the physical leaders and providers. Women are expected to respect the men and their position which is seen as a great responsibility. Additionally, women often learn skills of druidcraft and magic in order to better help their families. Women of the Nazali tribes cary a great weight on their shoulders as caregivers, emotional support, healers, and spiritual leaders while having very little say or rights on their own.
