The Devil

The old man takes a breath through the ends of his wiry mustache, the noise making Mabel's face pinch up all tight in the middle.   "There's a man that comes by here at night. Says he can help people like y'all. Told me to tell y'all 'bout him."   Brom makes a face like he's hearing some stupid shit, but Amos holds a hand out ahead of his chest.   "What he tell you about us?" Amos asks the old man.   There's a bit of quiet that seeps in, the fan overhead spinning like slow-dipped molasses. Brom feels sweat gather at the base of his collar and he shrugs his shoulders in a circle, glowers around the room with an impatient grimace while they wait for an answer. The smoke off Mabel's cigarette smells sweet like cinnamon apples.   "He told me y'all 'bout to die," the old man says. Brom's muscles pinch and he stares at him with wide, vicious eyes. "Said there ain't nothin' that can be done about it—unless you talk to him, that is."

Overview

A man of whispers and shadows, the Devil is synonymous with spirits and ghosts: a legend made of flesh that wanders in the dawn of twilight. Ubiquitous in nature, the Devil is the rumored creator and ruler of No-Man's, though rarely spotted and known to cause chaos. Those who claim to have seen him possess ash-white hair due to the color draining out, some saying they were offered the chance to trade in their soul.   Tall and imposing, the Devil is said to wander the desert after dark with his fabled black donkey in an attempt to barter for souls, though it's been notoriously said that he deals in all manner of black magic. Clothed in a dusty poncho and red-rimmed hat, the Devil follows the trail of the moon across No-Man's from dusk to dawn, able to leap over gulches and canyons on the back of his ornery steed.   What he offers in return for a soul differs with each story, though most involve lifelong contracts and promises of untold greatness.
