Illithids, also known as Mind Flayers, are the scourge of sentient creatures across countless worlds. Psionic tyrants, slavers, and interdimensional voyagers, they are insidious masterminds that harvest entire races for their own twisted ends. Subjugation, enslavement, and corruption by Ilithids colors the history of many races across the worlds, including the Githyanki, Githzerai, Grimlocks, Kua-toa, and
Duergar.
Ilithid are found mostly in the
Underdark, though they are not native to that area.
Physical Description and Abilities
Four tentacles snake from Ilithid's octopus-like heads, flexing in hungry anticipations when sentient creatures come near. Ilithids possess psionic powers that enable them to communicate telepathically and plant illusions into the minds of other creatures.
Ilithids subsist on the brains of humanoids. The brains provide enzymes, hormones, and psychic energy necessary for their survival. An Ilithid healthy from a brain-rich diet secretes a thin glaze of mucus that coats its mauve skin. It has been reported that Ilithids experience euphoria as they devour the brain of a humanoid, along with its memories, personality, and innermost fears.
