Ostiumite

Ostiumite is a strange but valuable resource. To the naked eye it's a semi-translucent, blunt, and rectangular crystal formation with purple and black hues. However, its special properties are very easily recognized. The most immediate sign is its magi-luminescence, because it lights up when exposed to any magical energy. In fact, it can be used to identify the presence and even the type of a magical aura. It glows in different colours depending on the classification of magic: red, orange or yellow for fundamental schools of magic, shades of green or blue for cerebral magic, and variations of pink, purple, and even black for the substantial schools of magic. Beyond their luminescence, ostiumite is a very potent crystal to be used in enchantments and magical rituals.

Researchers are thoroughly investigating the other properties of ostiumite, but its handling is not without danger to the user. There are dozens of ostiumite explosions on record to date, near all of them happening during experimentation. Therefor progress is slow and steady. Nevertheless, once stabilized, ostiumite offers a lot of power to whatever enchantment it fuels. Harvesting of ostiumite is obviously government regulated, because of its reactionary nature, and because of the dangers of its most easily accessible location: the Blackflame Gulch. It was the rich vein of ostiumite pockets in the depths of this gulch that formed the hundreds of portals to the Nine Hells and the Abyss, sparking the War of Flames. Near the end of this war, almost all of these active portals were dismantled, destroying the ostiumite with it. However, there are still several locations where the raw crystals are inactive and available. One only needs to be brave and prepared enough to reach it, store it safely, and make it back to the surface in one piece.
