Revilloth

Arcturias Kain (a.k.a. The Dark Scholar, The Deathless, The First Lich)

Born Arcturias Kain, in the year 2039, in the continent of Kamorell. He was a scholar, studying extraplanar knowledge, specifically, the dark reflection of the World Tree, the Shadowfell. It was known that the plane was the origin of a great evil, an entity called Esolas that entered the Material Plane thousands of years before even Kain was born. In the wake of this arrival, an entire region to the North of Taetora (which at this time had not yet been fully formed) saw every living thing within it instantly killed. Their bodies were reanimated, possessed by this dark reflection of life. No long after the God of the Earth, Orgar, quarantined this land and the people of the neighboring lands were tasked with preventing the spread of the undead hordes. Kain was curious about this power, as since then the Demon Lord Orcus took the domain of undeath into his possession, and gave his followers the means to access this dark knowledge to replicate the reanimation, to a degree. Kain knew that it could be controlled by mortal men, and that given enough Negative Energy, the undead could repair themselves, maintaining their existence far beyond the natural course. So he began experimentation, determined to find new ways to take this cursed knowledge even further than what was thought possible.   He realized that the souls of mortals were a thing that could be pulled from and transferred. He based his experiments of the idea that upon death, he needed a place for his soul to go instead of the afterlife. He wanted the benefits of undeath, while still maintaining his own mind and power. He built a phylactery that was designed to be a tether for his soul and a means to regenerate a new body instead of animating his corpse. He came to the conclusion that he needed to place his soul in the phylactery itself, which would mean killing his mortal body. He had no choice but to put his fate and trust in the hands of others, albeit temporarily. He drank a poison and let his assistants move his soul into its new home. His body reformed, and he was able to remotely control it as if he were inside it. He had achieved his goals, and became the first successful lich.   He rejoiced at his newfound immortality. But in time, he learned that all costs had not yet been paid. His body began to rot away. He couldn't find a solution, and turned to Orcus for answers in desperation. Orcus showed him the final piece of the puzzle. He had to maintain his body through the sacrifice of the souls of others. This thing he thought was a gift, quickly became a thing he desperately needed to hide. It wasn't long before his assistants found out, and he was forced to kill them and bind them to his phylactery in order to keep his secret safe. It wasn't enough though, and soon his home wanted him punished for his sins.   He only wanted to bring about an evolution of his people. He thought he could do it, he thought that he had. The truth, in this instance, was that he couldn't share his discovery. To him, they couldn't see past its cost. It was him or them, they could no longer coexist, and he had come to far to stop now. So he turned his power against them, ravaging his hometown, creating a army of undead of his own. This, notably, paid his debt to Orcus, who gained influence in the lands of Kamorell with the presence of that many undead. However, Kain didn't much care. He had no choice but continue, or else his eternal life be taken from him. He turned his attention to the neighboring cities, and his conquest soon brought him all the way to the capital city of Kamorell, the Citadel of Light. This was a symbol of peace, and a new future for the people of the world, created by Azoth Lightborn himself. The pride of mortal civilization. Within six months, in the Age 2099, it had fallen. A new age had begun, and Kain would rule, his a regime of terror and conquest, backed by his seeming immortality. He took a new name upon himself, shedding his identity as a mortal.   He ruled for over one thousand years after this. His ambition never ceased, sending ships to the nearby lands in hopes of spreading his control. But as his grip began to slip, with more rebels challenging him, from overseas and his own lands. So he worked on contingencies. While he worked, he was contacted by Orcus himself, who was pleased with the lich, and offered to make him a general of his undead army for eternity. Revilloth declined, refusing to serve another entity. He would make his own fate, and ascend to his own place of power. He also recorded his knowledge of the lichdom ritual, in what would be called the Book of Eternas. This way, mortals could hold the secrets of eternal life, not Orcus. He then put six other mages in his highest council through the lichdom ritual. He had also acquired a shard of the Shadowfell from the Gray Lands, and was able to construct a means to open a gate to it. He placed his and his allies new phylacteries there so that they would be reborn upon death within, and become fueled by the native Negative energies of the plane.   In the year 3271, Revilloth made his final stand and was defeated. The heroes celebrated the defeat of the tyrant, destroying his phylactery and ushering a new Age of peace and prosperity. Unknown to them, the phylactery was a trick. The one they destroyed no longer held the lich's soul. Deep in the Shadowfell, Revilloth was reborn, even more powerful that he once was. He and his council, the Circle of Dread, conquered the plane, building a new army from the population of Shadow Elves there.   Currently, he seeks bring about a great wound in the Weave of the World Tree, one that will let him assimilate the other plains into his realm.
