Esolas, Corrupter of Life
“The Darkness that would swallow the light. The Shadow in which all life finds its end. Hunger eternal.”
When the Shadowfell came into being, at its heart the first creature was born of the energy coming from the Negative Weave. The shadow in its nature was a lack of light, a lack of life itself. An empty void. This took root in the nature of this creature, which came to be called Esolas. Drawn to what it lacked, Esolas entered the Planar Tree, touching down in Hades. The very moment it touched down, its presence hit the Weave with such force, it ripped its fabric apart. The grass under its feet turned to ash, a wave of decay spreading and quickly overtaking the world. Every living thing was overtaken, choked out by the negative force that had appeared. All that remained was a gray wasteland. The life force was absorbed into Esolas, but it did not satisfy the void inside of it.
This was the beginning of the event known as the Corruption. The Weave was permanently damaged and cut off from Hades, and the damage would spread like a disease to the nearby planes.
The planes united and stood against Esolas, managing to seal the force of darkness away. However, the damage was irreversible. The Weave of life that brought life would be twisted allowing the birth of evil creatures into its worlds. There remain in the first planes that fell strong negative energy, and throughout the rest of the Tree are patches of corruption. Gone but not forgotten, the evil that grew in Esolas’s wake continues his legacy of destruction.
