2022/04/23: Swamp Venture

General Summary

Trails Day, Eve of the Harvest, 597th Year of the Hand   On this day we set out south along the Far View River to explore old tails of a tower in the swamp to the south.   We opted to travel by keel boat as the river was at it's calm season and would offer us the ability to carry more goods on the return trip.   Note: The travel down river is not for the faint of heart. Even at it's calm it seems the Far View River flows swift as it descends down a deep canyon into the swamp lands to the south.    After a day's travel we stopped at an outcrop along the river on its western shore. We secured the boat to the southern eddy and proceeded to make camp. The area was fairly small with two trees growing upon it's shore and steep canyon walls leading up with vines growing along it's walls. When a member of our party was near the vines they began to reach out for them. Asha attacked the vines, then it seemed as if the entire canyon wall came alive.   Both fire and lighting were used to battle the vines, but unfortunately both casters lost concentration after 1 round due to some additional beasts joining in the fun. Twig like creatures begin popping up out of the debris on the ground. Asha seemed uncharacteristically worried as memories of a past encounter here haunted her mind.   Goldbroad cast Speak With Plants and began asking the two trees for information while other party members were dealing with the vines. Surprisingly the two trees were sentient and apparently not fond of each other. The southern tree began summoning more creatures will we were still engaged with the vines. While individually not powerful there numbers were beginning to be an issue for the party. Orryn called forth animals from the wild to aid in our fight. Four Giant Goats answered the call and turned the tides in our favor. With the southern tree slain and the vines killed we were able to make camp for the evening without further issues.

The following day we continued south entering a vast swamp as the river leveled out into the valley below. While traversing the swamp we were beset upon by Giant Fogs and in the distance what appeared to be frog men. This encounter was brief and we suffered only minor damage. After which we continued on south where the swamp opened up into a vast lake.

On the far southern shores we could see what appeared to be a vast structure the local birds referred to as "The Twins". Even from our great distance the roar of what we assume to be a waterfall could be heard. There was a great fog bank to the east and the stench of death from the west. We followed the current south to the structure when a giant snake beast attacked.    It wrapped itself around our boat and for a time we worried sinking out here in the middle of this vast lake might be our last actions. Luckily we were able to dispatch the best and began freeing ourselves from it's grips. However all of a sudden a pair of huge crocodiles appeared. One snatched onto snake beast and began making it's way off. The other unfortunately saw us as it's next meal.   In the middle of all this a volley of arrows began to rain down on us from unseen creatures in the fog bank. Luckily we must have been at the edge of their range as few found purpose. Eventually the crocodile was subdued and we made for the western shores. There we setup camp and spent a day repairing the damage to our boat.

With supplies running short we decided to make for home. An long but uneventful 5 1/2 days were spent returning up river.
