The Blood-Iron Covenant

The Blood-Iron Covenant is a formidable confederation born from centuries of internecine strife, forged into a unified nation through necessity and shared survival. Once fractured by raiding, infighting, and scarcity, the Covenant transformed through discipline, regulation, and communal effort, evolving into a stable, militarized society governed by honour, cooperation, and mutual respect.

This shift—from predatory raiding and internal cannibalism to structured resource management and communal feasting—was driven by the need for survival against relentless external threats. Through organized hunts, domestication, agriculture, and strict societal taboos, the once-scattered tribes formed a self-sustaining nation, proving that brute force alone could not secure their future—only unity could.

Structure

The Covenant’s governance is built on a balance of collective wisdom, martial strength, and earned leadership, ensuring no single faction dominates while maintaining the ability to act decisively in war.

  • High Clans Assembly – A ruling council of elders and representatives from each race, tasked with codifying laws, resolving disputes, and overseeing governance. Laws are recorded in:
  • The Blood Scrolls – The evolving laws and traditions shaped by the Covenant’s ongoing development.
  • The Iron Scrolls – A record of lessons and laws from their long exodus, chronicling the trials that forged their unity.
  • The War Leader – A singular martial leader, chosen for combat prowess and strategic acumen, responsible for military command and national defense. Their rule is validated by both the Assembly and public demonstrations of strength.
  • Clan Chiefs – Leaders of the individual clans, responsible for local governance, recruitment, and upholding the tenets of the Covenant.
  • Meritocratic Ethos – Leadership is not inherited, but earned through battle, wisdom, and loyalty. This ensures the strongest and most capable lead, rather than those with mere bloodline claims.

Culture

Despite its martial foundation, the Blood-Iron Covenant is a structured, disciplined society where tradition, ritual, and honor shape daily life.

Strength Through Unity

  • The Covenant celebrates each race’s contributions through festivals, communal feasts, and ritual competitions, reinforcing collective purpose over individual ambition.
  • Conflict resolution is structured—disputes are settled through regulated duels, arbitration by elders, or public trials, ensuring violence remains controlled and purposeful.

The Great Crucible: A Symbol of Resilience

  • The Great Crucible represents transformation through hardship, symbolizing the Covenant’s escape from oppression and its forging into a single, unbreakable force.
  • Temples dedicated to the Crucible serve as both places of worship and training grounds, where martial discipline is interwoven with cultural heritage.

Rituals & Taboos

  • The Feast of the Great Hunt is an annual event, both a test of skill and a practical means of food distribution, ensuring fair resource allocation while reinforcing unity and strength.
  • Cannibalism is strictly forbidden, remembered only as a shameful mark of desperation from the time before the Covenant.

Trade & Adaptation

  • Once reliant solely on raiding, the Covenant has since developed trade networks, crafting advanced weaponry, siege engines, and shipbuilding techniques through Goblin ingenuity and Hobgoblin organization.
  • Fishing, domestication, and agriculture provide sustainable food sources, ensuring stability without reliance on constant war.

Gender Roles

The Covenant does not impose rigid gender roles; individuals are valued based on strength, skill, and contribution rather than birth.

The Role of Slavery

Slavery is banned among the Covenant member species, but it remains acceptable to own Humans, Elves, and Dwarves, a reflection of the histories of oppression and war that shaped their worldview.

History

The Pre-Pact Era (1200–1500 CE)

  • The Zealots of Aurelthar wage a war of eradication, their holy fire consuming entire settlements of Orckind and Goblinkind.
  • Atramire is no less brutal, using eldritch magic to enslave, experiment upon, or turn the tribes against each other.
  • The south offers no refuge, only scarcity and hostile nomadic hunters.
  • Tribal remnants flee east, gradually forming a shared identity, replacing endless war with structured competition, diplomacy, and collective survival.

The Pact Era (1500–1600 CE)

  • Orcs, Goblins, Hobgoblins, and Ogres—once bitter rivals—form the Iron Pact, a treaty of mutual survival, shared spoils, and collective defence.
  • Survival is brutal—initially dependent on raiding, opportunistic war, and desperate measures, including occasional cannibalism.
  • To end internal instability, the Pact formalizes regulated hunts, ensuring fair distribution of resources.
  • The Pact migrates north along the windswept coast, avoiding Atramire’s corrupted lands and enslaving or integrating human and goblin clans along the way.
  • Upon reaching the Blood Tribes of the Windswept Bay, the Pact chooses peace, offering an alliance rather than conquest, forming the Blood-Iron Covenant.

The Expansion Era (1600–1700 CE)

  • Domestication of wild beasts begins, providing controlled sources of meat, reducing reliance on overhunting.
  • Herd reserves are established, ensuring food security during harsh seasons.
  • Coastal fishing expands, creating an alternative food supply.
  • Goblin and Hobgoblin innovations introduce agriculture, supplementing the meat-based diet with grains and legumes.
  • Advanced preservation techniques—smoking, drying, and fermentation—allow for long-term food storage, ensuring stability during war and winter.

The Modern Era (1700–1741 CE)

  • The Covenant launches diplomatic efforts, sending small fishing vessels to Orelithia to establish trade relations.
  • The Stormforged Host, a powerful Hobgoblin navy from Vircune, discovers the Covenant, leading to technological exchanges and shipbuilding advancements.
  • The Covenant solidifies its borders, turning its lands into a fortress against external threats, ensuring that neither zealots nor sorcerers can break them again.

Military

Military & Defense

The Blood-Iron Covenant’s military is designed for defense and deterrence, ensuring its borders remain impenetrable while deterring expansionist threats.

  • The War Leader – Supreme commander of the military.
  • The War Council – A council of veteran warriors and strategists, advising the War Leader and acting as generals in times of war.
  • Defensive Strategy – While capable of conquest, the Covenant primarily fortifies its borders, ensuring that aggressors cannot spread their influence into their lands.
