Before the founding of the Meridian, when the Dreamers threatened to rebuild the world through ash and flame, Astralshaper endeavored to seek and understand the many fractured realms from a time before, hoping to gleam insight as to the nature of their apocalyptic circumstances. Ultimately, according to the Saga of Night, she found little but the decaying remains of Ancient fortresses and facilities, guarded by arcane constructs of both metal and flesh that represented a collection of subsequent civilizations that sought the same answers as the soon-to-be empress.
In the depths of the deserted, third realm of the Vespers - the very same realm where she first encountered notable legendary persons including Edvar Malfait, Gnarl, and Nox Vertinal - she very briefly mentioned survivors from another age, perhaps dating to a time before the Ancients themselves. Quoting from the Saga of Night, "...in that dark place, She found a glimmer of light, an ounce of hope within the most unlikely of kin. Familiar felines, unsuspecting in appearance, but in their mind She found answers, but not to her quest. In these cat-like peoples, She found tragedy, a deep sadness and guilt; children of a dead earth, long forgotten."
Philosophers and scholars throughout the Meridian of Stars' Eternal have debated whether she was referring to a suspicious enclave of exiled Tabaxi, or something else entirely. As it would turn out, it was another race in their own right. Discovered in R.293 by the esteemed Dr. Harrowitz, two peculiar cats were noted in his book to be wandering the deep Wastes as he was, one injured. They were different somehow though, standing on their hinds at roughly 2'0" and weighing as little as 20lbs, with large eyes built not for the everlasting darkness, but to "see" the whims of magic, specifically Divination. Additionally, there have been many suspicious reports of regular cats behaving rather uncharacteristically for their species, almost as if they had developed spontaneous intelligence, with specific intent in some of their actions and movements; although the correlation between these two occurrences is undetermined.
Harrowitz returned with the injured cAt and gave it treatment, whom opted to stay in the Meridian for the time being, earning the nickname "Mix" by the Doctor. He explains that this race has a specialized intelligence that cannot be rightfully compared to traditional sapience, hoarding a wealth of intuitive knowledge about the dying Wasteland and perhaps, even, the true cause. However they are unable to articulate or portray any meaningful explanations due to the fact that they cannot verbally speak, and their minds behave and operate in a very alien and abstract way when processing information, and thus perhaps may never be able to relay any useful information about the world at large. Besides this, both known members have expressed a very clear and definitive distaste for magic, though seem to know a considerable amount of the subject. Mix has proven to be an excellent inventor, proposing drafts and papers suggesting alternative pursuits of invention that other engineers often dismiss as absurd and impossible. Never-the-less, he was the co-founder of the Soul Lure and the five Warforged proofs, credited as being the primary inspiration for its founding principles, of which are still a closely guarded secret between the two.
The cAt writes his genius off as "i only knowz thiz becAuze cAtz know the other piecez to thiz" which sounds ridiculous at first, but he then continues with "A cAt knowz A little for everything; we hAve been here for A while", heavily implying that the entire species possesses a very niche yet intimate understanding that's akin to a piece of a greater puzzle; in a broader scope, this also suggests that there are more of its kind. Due to their lacking numbers, Mix is classified as a byproduct of rampant catalysis, mutating a normal cat to be the freak-of-nature it is today and is not recognized as an independent species.
