The Kingdom of Glas
Structure
THE SOVEREIGN
King Nikolai-Wilhelm Emilich Hohenzollern-Romanov rules as the undisputed and absolute Monarch of the Kingdom of Glas.HIS GOVERNMENT
As his sacred duty requires, the Suzerain holds the right to veto any decision of the Royal Government he judges unwise. His Highness is advised by a Royal Council, or Suzerain's Council. Veteran officials are granted the honor. This council votes on the Crown's budget decisions. If votes are tied, the Suzerain determines the outcome. Any vote so decided by His Highness is recorded as "Unanimous by Suzerain's Will".HIS MINISTERS
His Highness appoints four great ministers, who oversee the arms of his rule. They execute their mandate at their discretion, and make use of their offices' resources freely. The Suzerain's Council may countermand their orders with a 2/3 supermajority, if they are deemed abusive. To access additional resources, temporary or otherwise, minister must present proposals before the Suzerain and his council to be voted on. The Ministry of Rule governs the crown lands, roots out corruption, executes his edicts and his law. Culture
The Kingdom of Glas was founded by soldiers and officers hailing from many lands of the Old World. Notably among them are a high proportion of French, Germans, and Russians, who all brought their language and customs to Glas. However, there are smaller proportions of English, Americans, Swedes, Swiss, Dutch, and many other nationalities. Outnumbering them all however, are the native Glais, who speak a language distantly related to Irish and Scots Gaelic, a point of some theory and debate. While the initial population of the Kingdom overwhelmingly spoke German and French, with a strong minority of Russian, the demands of their location have begun to change that. The King has expressed a desire to integrate into the native population, rather than rule over them as a seperate caste. To that end, Officers and men from the Old World have been instructed to learn the local language and integrate their customs with the locals.
Combined into all of this, are the exiles lost through time and now stranded in the New World. Roman Legionaries, Spanish Galleons, French Imperial Guards, and soldiers from the Red and White armies of the Russian Revolution have all found their place in the Kingdom, making for an eccentric blend of times and cultures.
Public Agenda
The Kingdom of Glas has a single and simple agenda that overrides all others, and that is the cleansing of the island from the Greenskin invasion. All other goals are in service to this mission and it is the unifying national ideal. Beyond that, the rebuilding and modernization of Glas into a nation-state is the dream of the future.
Assets
The Kingdom of Glas maintains the only professional army on the island, and the only island in the world to make use of gunpowder weapons, a fact that has proven invaluable to both its diplomacy and its survival against superior numbers.
The Royal Navy, although quite small in numbers, is the only navy in the world to sail the seas armed with gunpowder weapons. The two 'iron sisters,' are the most advanced warships in the world and the only known ironclads to sail the seas. While the Royal Navy reliably fields canons on its vessels, both the number and size currently leave much to be desired, as the 3lb rifled canons primarily used are not heavy enough to breach the hulls of enemy warships, and even the larger 12lb canons recently put into production are undersized for traditional naval artillery.
Thatchworks, the primary industrial engine of the Kingdom and the source of much of its technical base, is the only known entity currently capable of mass producing goods and weapons at a standard greater than hand tooling, and currently boasts the most advanced manufacturing in the world, save maybe the Dwarves in certain areas.
History
The history of the Kingdom of Glas dates to the collapse of the Old World Order and the event now known as the /k/onvergance. In AL -15, electromagnetic storms of unknown origin ravaged earth. The modern way of life collapsed and the death toll was immense. From the aftermath of these storms, portals opened, spilling monsters out of myth into the world. The armies of the world, so reliant on the modern way of war, were caught unprepared. The world survived, and adapted to the new reality, but by the time of AL-5, many weaker nations had collapsed completely, unable to bear the strain being placed on their military and police. Many parts of the world became functionally nationless, in a state of total anarchy.
From the ruins of the Old World, there rose a man, born into the wealth of past generations and raised on stories of a bygone golden age, Nikolai-Wilhelm Emilich Hohenzollern-Romanov. The youngest scion of a union between the old Russian and German Imperial families, now rendered toothless by the march of history and time. With a wealth that only the descendant of royalty could muster, Nikolai devoted his life to the dream of restoring his family's fortunes to a state resembling their past glory. With a band of loyal followers he first met at a Mongolian Throat Singing Emporium, he planned a great expedition. Soldiers, tradesmen, hobbiest smiths, and other skilled artisans were recruited. Equipment was made or refurbished. Vast sums of money were spent, nearly bankrupting his house. Finally, the expedition was stuffed onto the two ironclad warships that had been purchased and refitted. There was no room or money for canons, for it was assumed they would aquire or forge them once in the New World. Sailing for an unstable portal, Nikolai-Wilhelm Emilich Hohenzollern-Romanov and his followers vanished without a trace from the Old World.
Demography and Population
The Kingdom of Glas exists, outside of the capital, as a medieval or even late iron age society. 98% of the population lives outside of cities, and the largest town, the capital, barely crests 2,000 people, although that is expected to change rapidly.
Territories
The Kingdom of Glas hypothetically claims dominion over the whole island. However, in practice, only the southern portion of the island, especially the area around Slánhitír, has any real Royal Control. Most peasants on the island live their lives with very little interaction with their government, and much of the island is still held by hostile powers or non-compliant human realms.
Military
The Kingdom of Glas divides its military into three, roughly equal arms. The Army, the Navy, and the Arlethe. The Army and Navy comprise the bulk of the Kingdom's land and sea forces, while the Arlethe act as the personal arm of the soverign, and also contain most of teh foreign units and those who have been stranded in time.
The Royal Army and Navy remain small, as a consequence of the Kingdom's limited ability to equip and field troops, and the low integration level of most of the population. However, the troops that are fielded are typically professsionals, either Old World Veterans, or the growing number of Glais natives. Recruits are drilled for several months, and serve a centralized and professional chain of command.
Technological Level
While most of Glas remains in the iron age, Slánhitír has access to the beginning tools of the industrial revolution, and can equip an army roughly to the standards of 18th Century Europe.
Religion
The Kingdom of Glas maintains and promotes the Holy Catholic and Orthodox Church of Glas as the official state religion. However, conversion efforts and supression of the pagan druidic faith have been scarce to non-existant, due primarily to the existential threat facing the Kingdom and the need for cooperation with all factions of Glas.
Foreign Relations
The Kingdom of Glas maintains foreign relations with the Aeltherion Empire, the Dwarven Holds, and Tosario, one of the warlords of the Decipula peninsual. The Kingdom generally treats human or other civilized nations cordially, while assuming any bestial or Greenskin associated forces are hostile. Many in the Kingdom maintain a distrust of the Elves, due to their hegemonic status in the world and the threat the Kingdom poses to that. A non-aggression pact has been signed with the Dark Elves, preventing piracy on Royal shipping for the time being.
Agriculture & Industry
The Kingdom of Glas, having brought over many Old World industrial and agricultural techniques, has the most advanced farming and industrial sectors on the island, and potentially the entire world. Techniques such as crop rotation and the scythe that were taken for granted in the old world, are considered groundbreaking inventions on Glas.
Similarily for industry, inventions like Blast Furnaces, spinning jennies, and the flying shuttle hold the promise of revolutionizing production and boosting the island to the forefront of the world.
Trade & Transport
Dirt roads, occasionally improved. Few bridges. Rowboats and small craft on rivers. Cogs and Galleys on open oceans.
Education
97% of the population illiterate. Towns and cities are partially literate to an elementary level. Advanced education beyond middle school is exceedingly rare.
