You have trained, and regularly take out with you, up to 3 additional animals of the exact type you chose with the Pet feat.
Provided all 4 don't die within 6 months, you shouldn't NOT have a Pet for more than a few hours if yours dies.
Only one can join an encounter alongside you (the others stay outside initiative).
