Yreka Sheriff

"I shot the Sheriff"

The warm-welcoming man in charge of law and order in the norther California town of Yreka is, in fact, barely a man at all. The nameless Sheriff of Yreka is, at present, a rootin' and shootin' robobrain with the salvaged mind of an old Desert Ranger who was fatally wounded in an attack on the town many years ago. He doesn't remember terribly much about his past life before that point, as age and the trauma of the event and subsequent "resurrection' have robbed him of much of his long-term memory (and a good deal of his short-term memory to boot) but he seems genuine in his concern for the well-being of the town and its people. It's all he knows, after all.
Unfortunately the Sheriff's idea of law and order in Yreka includes a mountain of laws and stipulations that all denizens of the town are expected to follow to the letter. He claims to be a fair and just arbiter of punishment when it is due, and the town does appear to be functioning better than most isolated communities in the wasteland, thriving even. But after witnessing a legally sanctioned duel between two townsfolk and observing the garish "examples" that appear to be made of repeat offenders, the party currently remains wary of the Sheriff, his numerous Deputies, and their questionable approach to the law.   After speaking with the owner of the town's junkyard the party came to learn that the Sheriff of Yreka is not what he seems. The man who was once the Sheriff did not survive his tussle with the raiders, and the robot who now claims to be him is nothing but an empty shell with an imperfect personality matrix based far more heavily on old "Cowboys and Commies" tales than the actual man. Compounding the issue is years worth of missed maintenance appointments leading to a steady degradation of the Sheriff's mental faculties. The current state of the town speaks to how well that all turned out. The only people in town who know the truth are the men responsible for creating the insane lawman, the junkyard mechanic Moses and the town doctor/pawn broker Juan who worked together to cover up the original Sheriff's death, and only the former of the two has any interest in fixing their mistake.
In the end the party dealt with the Sheriff the way most issues are dealt with on the fringes of California. With a bullet (or two) fairly ripped in a duel at high noon the Sheriff was felled in front of the gathered masses of his townsfolk. Luckily they had worked with Moses to work out a plan for more than just murder: With the party's input, a new personality matrix was created for the Sheriff that more accurately represented what a man of law should be. The future of Yreka seems brighter, even if most of its residents will never know the truth of what happened.
