Sophia Raker

"I just want you to know; it was never personal."

There has been a figure shadowing the Portland expedition team since before they embarked upon their journey. A survivor of the New California Republic's expansion efforts, Sophia Raker was a native of the Twin Mothers tribe in Baja, California.   When the NCR expanded south into the region hers was one of many tribes steamrolled by the unstoppable force of the young nation's growing drive. While others may have fallen to open conflict, the Twin Mothers people were wiped out in a far more insidious manner: When the tribe refused the NCR's offer to join the republic willingly, highly addictive chems were introduced to the otherwise clean community by NCR representatives under the guise of open trade. In a matter of months the entire tribe was hooked on one or more addictive substance to the point where "everyone who could have fought was too strung-out or desperate for a fix to fight back when they rolled up and planted a flag." Many of the tribesman, such as Raker's brother Sullivan, were subsequently relocated to other NCR towns where they would end up incarcerated. Chems were illegal in New California, after all. Raker was one of the only people to escape, and pledged her life from that point on to waging a one-woman war against the NCR.   For the next several years she would take every opportunity to foil, murder, sabotage, or delay the NCR at any turn. When she learned they were sending expedition teams into Oregon state she was quick to follow up, successfully stopping five entire expeditions from making it past the storm wall. It wasn't until the sixth expedition that a forward team was sent to scout the trail by truck first, thereby drawing Raker's attention elsewhere. The actual expedition team was sent shortly thereafter on foot, and made it all the way to Roseburg before she and a gathered team of mercenaries caught up to the group.   On a long stretch of the I-5 between Eugene and Salem, Raker and her hired thugs ambushed the expedition crew by vehicle. The fight left several mercs and one of the NCR team dead, with Raker confident that the looming labyrinth of the Slag would finish off the rest. Knowing that it would be impossible to return through the storm wall, Raker decided to continue on to Portland with what remained of her crew to find whatever it is the NCR was so determined to get their hands on as part of this Operation Thunderbird.   They would come to the Tigard Line, a territory border between the city's defenders the Guardians and a horde of super mutants from Beaverton. She broke through to the Portland side during the night and made haste into the city, leaving a devastated breach in the Guardian's defenses that would soon be exploited by the mutants. From there Raker quickly ascertained a lay of the land and determined that she needed a new set of wheels, and found one at the Corvega Assembly Plant run by the local gearhead Greasers. She split from the remains of her group, leaving the only surviving members (a pair of guards from the town of Weed) to fend for themselves. With the Guardians hot on her trail she fled deeper into the city, eventually becoming cornered at Lloyd Center by the local cartel and its leader. She would likely have died there, within the bowels of 56 at the hands of a few Van Graff thugs, had a stroke of ironic fate not spared her.   The very same people she had tried multiple times to kill, the remaining members of the Portland expedition team, came to rescue her on behalf of who else but the Guardians. Raker went along with the rescue, choosing to tell the former convicts everything after they had secured an escape. Her failure to stop the expedition had come back, and brought with it her failure to avoid the Guardians. When the party took their rightful revenge by turning her over to face judgement at General Horn's hands, for the first time in her life Raker went without a fight. She would meet her end at the hands of the Guardians, and her body remains strung up on the Defcon wall as just another example.
