Session 7a: The Island and The Institute
General Summary
Our session started with the Pioneers underway toward Spectacle Island. Kenny and Jason wandered the ship, talking to May, meeting the crew, and meeting the captain, Johnny. Not long into their journey, they were attacked by a patrol boat from an unknown adversary. A super mutant boss and three thugs jumped into the boat. In the fighting, Cutter and Fisto were thrown overboard, lost to the sea. The fight began with the super mutant striking Johnny with his sledgehammer. Johnny, critically failing to evade the blow, was severely bludgeoned and knocked out of the fight. The players, along with an enraged Mag, retaliated against the attackers, annihilating them. May and the crew tended to Johnny, who was in critical condition and appeared to be completely paralyzed. May took command of the ship and pressed onward in the hope that the scientists could help save Johnny.
The ship arrived, sneaking past the Minutemen blockade. Jason and Kenny investigated the island and found the scientists' lab. The scientists revealed themselves to be the Institute remnants and informed the players that they could not leave, as they were essential in the tense political system of the island, running the fusion reactor all the banished groups on the island relied on. They requested the players steal a part they needed to automate the reactor from the Rust Devils, a scrappy former raider gang who wanted to be in charge of the reactor despite lacking the capability, creating a conundrum. First, the players implored the scientists to help Johnny, to which they agreed. Then, the players explored the island, meeting the various quirky factions that called it home.
First, they met the Gunners, camped out in a giant collection of Conex boxes on the shore, silently drinking and watching time go by after their horrendous defeat by the Minutemen. The players then met a band of super mutants led by the honorable warrior Kenny had met a few days ago in the Boston Common, who bequeathed the power fist he now wielded to him. The mutant, Hercules, invited them to his camp, where he and his warriors showed great hospitality and traded stories with the players. Upon one of the warriors, Jamison, mentioning his laser rifle's incredible capacity for destroying foes in power armor, Kenny asked for his help in defeating the mob's henchmen who had beaten him up all the way back in Diamond City. Jamison obliged.
The players then met the Pack, wild tribal raiders who now seemed content to party like there was no tomorrow for as long as they could. Kenny then met some gentlemen sitting in a scrappy villa, shoddily constructed from Conex boxes and scrap. They met the leader of these "Gs," Andy Bates, who ranted to him about the will to power, his misogyny, luxury cars, and being a real man. Kenny obliged this nonsense, amused by it, and then went to meet the Disciples. They were vicious killers who had been forced to temper their violent tendencies for the sake of survival, running the only restaurant and bar in town.
Finally, the players infiltrated the Rust Devils' compound for the part, assisted by one of the Institute's Coursers, RM-57. They sneaked into the warehouse and seized the part they needed, but they paused as a strange man stood in the door, begging them to let him find some legs for his wife, whining that she lost them in a fight. The players did not tolerate him, threatening him until he left. They then found the part they needed and returned to the scientists. The Pioneers, the scientists, and Jamison climbed aboard and pushed off.
