Session 34: All Out War

General Summary

The session began with the players getting in contact with Dispatcher Lucas, who informed them that the entire coastline was unsafe due to enemy fire. He assured them he would guide them through the blockade. Three vertibirds veered away from the main battle and joined the players, who were on two patrol boats. They were instructed to follow the lead vertibird while the other two drew enemy fire. The plan proceeded smoothly, with the players battling several enemy torpedo boats as they weaved through both enemy and friendly ships. At one point, as they passed an enemy ship, Jimbob caught sight of the enemy commander and attempted a psychic spell, but the commander resisted, grinning as he countered the spell. Eventually, the players made it through the blockade and returned to Vantage, finding the settlement in chaos.

Downstairs, Paul was scrambling to double the patrols around the area and drawing up evacuation routes in case the worst happened. He encouraged the players, telling them that everyone was counting on them. Upstairs, Gramps was rushing to get the troops ready for combat. When questioned, Gramps admitted he couldn't in good conscience send the troops into battle without them completing their final tests. Amid the chaos, Jenkins informed them that a vertibird was requesting permission to land. The players approved, and out jumped General Jane, clad in her custom power armor. She made a grand entrance, setting down her rifle and stepping out of her armor. She greeted the players, revealing that she was, in fact, Centurion.   General Jane made herself at home, heading to the command room with the players and their officers. She briefed them on the situation, explaining that the enemy fleet had attacked early on the morning of the 27th. The Navy Corps had quickly engaged, and shortly after, a massive enemy army had been seen moving north, which the Army Corps responded to. The naval battle had been tough, but with the help of the Air Corps, they managed to hold the line. However, enemy ships had been spotted gathering near the shore of Malden, and intelligence suggested they were planning to strike into Malden to destroy the Air Corps base. Jane requested that all available men be sent, but Gramps insisted the troops needed to complete their final assessment first. Reluctantly, the players backed him up, and Jane relented, asking the players to assist themselves. They agreed and were soon sent on a vertibird to Kingsport Lighthouse.   As they approached the lighthouse, they saw its laser overwhelmed by enemy artillery fire, striking it hard. After landing, the players took command of the shaken militia, who had just lost their commanders in the blast. The players quickly led the men into defensive positions, bracing for the enemy forces' landfall. At first, the landing craft came ashore one by one, followed by larger waves, which the defenders successfully repelled. However, when the enemy landing craft stopped and idled far from shore, the players grew wary. Through his scope, Gerrek spotted one of the enemy boat captains spying on them with binoculars and talking on a radio set. Realizing an artillery strike was imminent, the players ordered a retreat, and Kingsport was engulfed by an artillery barrage.   With the enemy making landfall, the players had no choice but to continue retreating. They received orders from Lucas to delay the advancing enemy force as long as possible. The players took command of Minuteman artillery, using it to tear up the countryside and make it inaccessible for the enemy's mechanized columns. This forced the enemy into a chokepoint where Jimbob and Jason laid explosives. Through harassment tactics and strategic maneuvers, they managed to delay the enemy for two days—long enough for the Malden militia to fully mobilize.   The players and the Malden militia rendezvoused at The Slog, where they were surprised to find their own troops, now fully armed and ready, waiting for their command. Each player took command of one or two squads and prepared their defenses. The Red Tide forces sent increasingly well-equipped waves of enemies, but the players and their troops easily defeated them with the Gorillas doing especially well, hitting their heavy infantry from the flank and tearing them apart. However, their confidence was shaken when the Red Tide called in an artillery barage and sent in a fully armed APC as a final, desperate assault.
