Session 27: Operation Inoculum
General Summary
The session began with Kutter, Jason, and Gerrek taking a week's downtime to hone their skills and work on projects, unlocking new abilities and improving their endurance. They found a note on the kitchen counter from Cecile, explaining his reason for departure. He said he had almost died multiple times in the past two weeks and had experienced major physical trauma. He thanked them for the ride and left a number that seemingly wasn't his. Jason noted that it was about time for the cure to ship and subsequently got in contact with Todd. Todd told him that he had been compiling a plan with their friend, a person the players did not know. Todd and the friend arrived, and the friend took over the conversation. He asked the players how they planned on distributing the cure. Jason didn't have a good answer, so the man revealed he was from The Railroad and that they wanted to distribute the cure. The plan was set: the players would steal the cure from the lab, and The Railroad would distribute it.
The players made a thorough plan and prepared to steal all the resources required to manufacture and distribute the cure while deleting the data to prevent the CFR from spreading it. They hiked to the lab under cover of darkness, setting up alibis by putting recruits in public places wearing their clothes. They breached the perimeter and coordinated with Todd to cut the cameras while they went in and out of the buildings they needed to access. Kutter, Chokehold, and Benjamin flawlessly infiltrated the logistics building and stole the unactivated serum. Jason and Blair infiltrated the Biology Lab, but Jason had to throw a terminal at Director Karlin when he witnessed the break-in. They managed to purge the data. Gerrek got into engineering but tore his rucksack open while packing up the equipment. He managed to stitch it back together and escape.
They all rendezvoused at The Vault. Jason used a thermite breaching charge to breach the door, and the operation went loud. Kutter and Chokehold used heavy riot shields they found to plow through the security doors, and Jason hacked the elevator. They descended into the vault and battled the automated security. Gerrek was bombarded by machine gun fire and missiles from both sentry bots, but while lying on the ground, he convinced Benjamin to jump down and help them. Benjamin and Jason each hacked an Assaultron and Sentry Bot, respectively, but the team was absolutely bloodied after the first fight, which did not bode well for the next obstacle.
Fearing the way things were going, Gerrek forced Benjamin at gunpoint to take him to the surface on the elevator, meaning the elevator would only return just in time. When they opened the security doors, ten machine gun turrets ripped into Kutter and Chokehold, almost killing Kutter and brutally eviscerating Chokehold, who died instantly. Kutter and Jason’s sentry bot managed to destroy all the turrets with missiles before anyone else was hurt. They sprinted down the hall, got the activator for the cure, and sprinted to the elevator. It arrived just as the Minutemen were arriving. They had to run and hide as a vertibird searched above. It found Kutter and Benjamin and hailed machine gun fire on Kutter, knocking him unconscious. However, he managed to throw Benjamin, allowing him to escape. Kutter was seized by the Minutemen.
After the escape, the group reunited and sent The Railroad off with the cure. Blair punched Gerrek in the face, prompting him to reach for his bottlecap mine. RM, emerging from the woods, saw this and put her rifle to his head, telling him to come willingly to face judgment from the others. He pushed his luck, moving, and she took the shot, knocking him out. They stabilized him and took his unconscious body back to Vantage, where they locked him in his room, now boarded up and stripped.
The group tried to recover from the fight. Benjamin drank, Blair smoked on the couch, and RM doubted if shooting Gerrek was the right call. Jason tried to keep his mind occupied, grabbing a drink and then looking to other matters, talking to Gramps about the possibility of remodeling.
