Session 26: Kenny's Ascension

General Summary

The duel began with Kenny unleashing a torrent of attacks on his master while Kutter performed a downward strike that Henderson sidestepped. Henderson retaliated by using his skills on his pupil, knocking him to the floor, out cold, in an instant. However, the disease ravaging Kutter and Kenny completely subsided, and Kenny was able to be revived. As the players battled Henderson and his wretches, he and Kenny traded blows. Tired of interruptions, Ronald requested a proper honor duel. Kenny accepted, was healed completely, and his skills began to return as his ki felt whole again. From then on, Henderson treated any interruptions with no mercy, unleashing Eldritch blasts as retaliation, especially targeting Quinten, who was determined to help Kenny.
The others held back the wave of wretches, with RM manipulating them to run in terror and Sharos throwing and shooting bottle cap mines like airburst shells. Henderson told Kenny the rest of the bargain: if Kenny failed to beat him, Ronald would be Ug-Qualtoth's slave for eternity. Leroy, late to the party, finally broke through the swarm of ghouls with a dramatic thunderous smite and joined the battle, but with him came an even larger swarm of ghouls.
Kenny landed a stunning strike and took the chance to inspect the crown. He could feel that this crown was Henderson's connection to Ug-Qualtoth. He beckoned Jason over, who tried to remove the crown. As he did, an invisible force grasped him, trying to get him to stab himself, but Jason overpowered it. Henderson rose again, seemingly fully possessed by the dark god. At this point, all hell broke loose, with Henderson unleashing his spells on all players. The players, however, fought back despite being swarmed by wretches. Kutter especially fought hard against the ghouls, even after falling in battle and getting up twice, using ghouls like clubs to eviscerate other ghouls.
The battle eventually came to an end as Jason knocked Henderson to the ground. Kenny approached his master and had Jason finish the procedure, but they found that the crown was woven into his cranium, ensuring his certain death. However, Kenny knew he must break the pact to save himself from the dark deal and his master from eternal enslavement. There was only one option. Kenny ripped the crown out of Henderson's head, critically wounding him but finally releasing him from the dark god's influence. Henderson rapidly aged, but his lucidity returned. With ragged breath, he told Kenny more about the ritual and his resurrection, but more importantly, that he was sorry, that he never needed the power, that Kenny was strong and righteous enough to save the people of the wasteland. With that, he passed. The ghouls around them all withered and crumbled.
Kenny collected himself, gathered his things and Henderson's tomes, then carried his body out of the quarry. The players followed, meeting with their men and the Order Luminarius. Within their ranks, seven were wounded and four had died. The players and their troops walked home, rested, and began a funeral mired with a mix of pride in their victory but grief for their fallen. A funeral pyre was constructed for the fallen and for Henderson, officiated by Leroy, who prayed to Atom for their souls to be at peace. The players mingled for a while, with Kenny, RM, Blair, and Jason watching the fire burn, while Kutter, Quinten, and Sharos talked to their men about their fallen comrades.
