Session 24: Tip of the Spear
General Summary
The session began with The Liberators relaxing in their base, recovering from their battle with the strange sea creature. Cecile, in particular, was severely injured. Just then, Gerrek and Reshaun burst in to inform the team of the plot they uncovered while cleaning up the Crimson Hand remnants: several bombs were being planted across Hollis and would detonate in a day or two. The players weighed their decisions. Cecile, Kenny, and Kutter were all sick and couldn't heal from any source. When Leroy tried to heal them, his vitality was sapped from him. Despite the situation, the imminent attack on Hollis took priority.
The players briefed their recruits and allies. Paul put Vantage into lockdown, Blair offered to lead the troops, and Benjamin offered to join the players to help defuse the bombs. They deployed their squads to civilian targets and contacted Akira to explain the situation. Understanding their worries about infiltrators in the Minutemen, Akira offered to help them search bases while keeping things under the rug, sending a ranger to each base to give them the access they needed to find the bombs.
With that, the players deployed with Benjamin, and their squads deployed to civilian targets. The players first went to Egret Naval Base, where they found three bombs: one in the ammo storage and two on boats under repair. They found the perpetrator, a super mutant Master Chief turncoat who, after being subdued, was about to be brutally interrogated by the players when they were pulled away by the officers on base. Admiral Longfellow, after talking Leroy down with a laser pistol to Leroy's fusion core, introduced himself, commending their decisive methods but regretfully informing them that neither he nor they could operate like that. He offered them all a drink after their operation is over but went quiet when Leroy mentioned that he was a Child of Atom.
The players moved on to the next suspected target, Jamaica Plain. They saw that the refugee crisis had subsided quickly in the eight months since Kenny and Gerrek helped found Vantage, but a small relief center remained for the refugees. They searched all the tents, with Kenny finding a bomb in a kitchen cabinet, which he set off by mistake. He quickly dodged the blast, but Gerrek and a civilian were caught in the tent. Quickly, the Logistics Corps personnel and city security rushed in, asking the players what happened. Kenny brushed it off as a gas explosion, using his cooking knowledge to deceive the cops. The other players tried to convince the provisioner not to radio in, but when he tried to quickly report the situation, Sharos put him down. Upon inspecting his radio, they found not standard frequencies but the private frequency of the infiltrators.
Cecile used his voice modulation and drunkenness to extract information from the enemy commander by playing the fool. In order to find the enemy, Benjamin and Sharos built a device to triangulate his position while Cecile kept him talking. They found out he was right outside The Castle and asked Centurion for a quick vertibird to assist. The players flew over to The Castle and barely dodged a rocket from a concealed position outside The Castle. As half the players jumped out and half landed at The Castle, they witnessed a large squad of super mutant soldiers breach the walls of The Castle. The players quickly converged inside the breached section of The Castle, finding the doors to the brig barred.
Leroy and Kutter bashed the door open to find Porter Gage in the interrogation room with Jamison and Hercules, each holding a pistol to either side of his head. Hercules told the players his mission was to kill Porter Gage. Jamison, however, tried to cut a deal. This enraged Hercules, who began raving about cowardice. Seeing the situation had become impossible to get out of alive, his men tried to calm him down, which escalated into them trying to restrain him. His rage flared until he was swinging his war hammer and blasting his minigun at his own men. The mutants helped the players restrain him in seconds.
Major Ronnie Shaw approached them, thanking them for their help. She then pulled Sharos away to some mysterious meeting.
