Protamin

Protamin is a liquid substance excreted by various plants and was first discovered during terraforming experiments for Titan and Mars.  The Green Mage Society found various uses for it, but an engineer named Nomorria found a way to use it as part of a formula to create a fuel source.  It became best used for space travel and its efficiency made it so humans can go further than they have been able to before. 
The Green Mage Society has used this to help with developing the travel ability for their living ships that the Planet Seeders used to travel outside of the Sol system and terraform other dead worlds as they have been tasked with.  The Green Mage Society developed plants that made more concentrated Protamin that would usually require a lot of processing and kept it a hidden secret that they have only shared with Nomorria and the Nomorrians she created.  It gave them advantages in space travel over any other factions or people in the known universe. They were able to move faster and for longer distances.  Since the plants were grown on the ships, they were able to make more fuel while on the go.
Nomorria also used Protamin when she created the Nomorrians to fuel their bodies.  Her Reapers were the first she tried using the more concentrated form of Protamin.  While successful, it seemed to limit their personalities, unlike the less concentrated form she used on her first two Nomorrians. 
The Nomorrians evolved the plants they were gifted after leaving Earth that create a more unique form of Protamin and it is a part of their species.  They still grow original breeds of the plants that made the more concentrated Protamin for their fuel source for space travel and all other things.
Other people who left Earth, Mars, Titan, and other colonies in the Sol system due to the purge of the system brought the plants they had and continue to be essential to their peoples. Plant variations of the various known plants became common and almost unique to what faction is growing them to the point sensors can almost pinpoint where a ship last bought fuel.  This allowed some governments to better control and enforce embargos and reduce smuggling.  Various people and races have tried to mimic The Green Mage Society's concentrated form of Protamin that they can produce but none have succeded or didn't know how to use it if they did.
There are rumors that Nomorria developed an even more potent and concentrated form of Protamin.  But it is hidden and rumored to have been used on the creation of only 1 of her Reapers.
