The Omen

Well this shouldn't have happened. There shouldn't be anything up on that moon, or around it. Something up there, however, has just become active and has connected with our systems. Everything we could and could not access in the system was downloaded, and those that we could not previously... well most of them have been decrypted.
— Helen Valen - Settlement Engineer: Kaedes II

The Omen was only recently fabricated, the most advanced ship produced since the fall of the empire. The Kaedes system had been one of the last outpost worlds settled prior to the fall, as part of the settlement program, an automated space dock was constructed around the the moon of the second planet where the settlement would be founded. Once a century had passed without being activated by any of the settlers, the dock entered its active phase, reaching out to any systems which would respond to its communication protocols.
The closest subspace communication buoys were non-responsive beyond responding that they are in need of maintenance. Failing further communication outward from the system, the on-board intelligence (Layorna) instead attempted to communicate with the settlement below, still not finding the reason for the lack of communication. With the brief communication with the ship on the planet below, Layorna understood why the dock hadn't been activated yet, while the settlement had still been in the early stages, with lack of support from their founding house, the settlement had not only lost access to technology, it also lost access to knowledge which was no longer taught through the systems on the ship but word of mouth. As the dock went into production mode, it decrypted the systems on the Kaelin to allow the settlement the ability to truly support itself while sending out drones to mine the nearby planets and asteroid fields for materials that it didn't already have on hand.
With the lack of technical skills and knowledge on Kaedes II, Layorna decided to create an escort class vessel to be utilised by the colony below and convince them to investigate the subspace buoy in need of maintenance in the (System to be added later, along with Distance). With this task in mind, she designed the Omen, an escort class vessel which was then placed into production. With the limited resources available to her at this time she was unable to create the warp drives that the empire once had access to, instead deciding to fabricate a stardrive instead. The last two components to be added to the ship were herself and a string attaching the power systems of the station and the omen. Once connected, she gently disconnected it from the station, bringing to life a new singularity core, a power source that hadn't been manufactured in over a century.
