The gods are real, and powered by the faith of those who believe in them. Then, 4,000 years ago, the gods disappeared. Their home, the Celestial Plane, was invaded by Shadow Beings hell bent on destroying all of creation. To prevent these creatures from making it to the human world, the gods sealed the bridge between their world and the human world, and took the power to use magic once they realized humans could and would use it to try and follow them. Their influence is still felt on the world - they answer prayers and protect their shrines - but none of them have touched human soil in that time, and their distance costs them power.   But most people don't know any of that. Without direct intervention, many people have stopped believing, and those who could tell the stories are either forbidden to or lost the details of them long ago. The only human magic that remains is left in artifacts enchanted long ago, and while they can still be activated, or have their magic drained from them, they along are what's left of a long legacy of spellcasters.   Beyond this, the world is very much like the one you know.
