Your first step in playing an adventurer in the Dungeons & Dragons game is to imagine and create a character of your own. Your character is a combination of game statistics, roleplaying hooks, and your imagination. This section provides guidelines for each of the choices you will make to define who your character is within the roleplaying world. Follow these simplified steps to prepare for your adventure:
Choose a Race (Ability Score Increase, Age Range, Alignment, Size, Speed, and possibly a Subrace)
Choose a Class (What kind of power your character will wield)
Create a Description (of your character's personality, appearance, and backstory)
Choose a Background (Proficiencies, Additional Languages, Equipment, and Suggested Characteristics)
Choose your Starting Equipment (Wealth, Adventuring Gear, Tools, Armor, Weapons, Trinkets, and Mounts)
Roll your Ability Scores
Once these decisions have been made, you have a first-level character who is ready for adventure! Depending on your campaign, the GM might determine a higher-level starting point. If you need to level up your character, follow these simplified steps:
Determine health increase
Check your class table for new features and traits
Spellcasters might learn new spells
As you progress through the game, your character will gain experience, which will allow them to continue to advance in levels and learn new options and capabilities which can dramatically affect your story. Refer back to the Player Options section to review the many potential benefits you could acquire throughout your adventure.
