Mimic Species in Faerûn | World Anvil

Mimic

Mimics are a type of shapeshifting predatory monstrosity that typically assume the form of inanimate objects. They usually prey on small animals, but are known to readily (and usually successfully) attack fully-grown humanoids. Typically, mimics assume the form of objects likely to be interacted with - doors, chairs, and chests. Their outward texture can be altered to be indistinguishable from the real thing, and is covered with a sticky adhesive that is difficult to pull away from. Mimics can also reshape themselves to extend pseudopods to catch nearby creatures that have not stuck themselves.

While most mimics only possess rudimentary hunting intelligence, some can develop language and reasoning skills, and can communicate with others. Particularly old mimics can make themselves incredibly large, such as imitating an entire dragon's hoard, and can emit a corrosive mist to defend themselves. The precise origin of mimics is unknown, but the general consensus among sages is that they were artifically created by wizards to guard their belongings. However, some speculate that the creatures instead originated in the far realm.
