Corellon Larethian Character in Faerûn | World Anvil

Corellon Larethian

Corellon Larethian (typically referred to as just Corellon) is the patron deity of elves. While usually depicted and referred to as male, Corellon is occasionally depicted as female or nonbinary. He is considered to be highly mercurial, shifting forms and moods on a whim. Unlike many other deities, the faithful of Corellon do not engage in complex rituals or frequent ceremonies, but instead pursue their faith as they see fit.

Personal history

There are a number of different stories professing the origin of Corellon and the beginning of elves, and as such, only one will be presented here. According to this tale, Corellon existed far before elves, dancing between worlds and planes. He was infinitely mutable and graceful, and freely consorted with any god he saw fit. While most gods accepted Corellon's mercurial personality, the god Gruumsh did not. Other gods respected the wrath of Gruumsh, but Corellon paid him no heed. Gruumsh was able to get close to Corellon and wound him, igniting a conflict across the planes. However, it was from this blood that the first elves were created.

These primal elves were similar to Corellon in that they were mutable and mercurial, albeit not nearly as powerful. The elves, fey creatures at the time, followed Corellon as he travelled around the planes. When Corellon finally took notice of them, he brought them to the plane of Arvandor. He spoke with them, and after they gave him new ideas, he selected a number for special treatment. These primal elves became extremely powerful, to the level of deities.

However, one of the new deities was not satisfied with her position, wishing to be elevated even further. This deity, Lolth, convinced many elves and deities to give up a small amount of personal freedom to work together and become the most powerful beings in the planes. She encouraged the primal elves to give up their freely-shifting forms, and instead adopt static bodies.

When Corellon discovered this perceived treachery, he rallied his followers against Lolth. Both of them gathered their supporters in great hosts for a debate, and the two took turns trying to convince the elves of their side. However, during this debate, Lolth attempted to strike a fatal blow against Corellon. His supporters defended him, but the supporters of Lolth did nothing to stop her.

With the elves and their deities split along hard lines, Corellon and Lolth departed from each others' presence. Corellon and the deities that supported him formed the Seldarine, while Lolth became a demon and the leader of the Dark Seldarine. Corellon then cast out all the elves from Arvandor, forcing them to adopt mortal, unchanging bodies and to wander the planes. The elves that followed Lolth became the first dark elves, or drow.

As a consequence, no elf is granted eternal life in Arvandor. Instead, elven souls are permitted a short period of respite in the plane by the other members of the Seldarine, before they are reincarnated into a new body elsewhere.
