The Sanguine Edge

An ancient blade once held in Avernus, the first level of the Nine Hells of Bator, it is currently held by the tiefling Damkos. The blade is a long black sword of polished obsidian with a spiked grip and color changing gem in the pommel. The gem changing depending on the blade's emotion red means full, white means hungry, and purple means asleep. What the blade feeds on is the tricky part. It wants blood, lots of blood. When a being with blood is slaughtered by it the blood flows down through the channels to the gem.

The quantity of blood does not matter so much as the quality. Slaughtering a village will not feed it as much as a harrowing duel, and the death, of a warlord. If fully fed the blade will not stir for a month or more, although feeding it to this level would require a ungoldy amount of slaughter or a particularly deadly fight. When not fed the blade will call to its chosen wielder to feed it. The call is not spoken but manifests as increased anger and a lust for combat.

If resisted for long enough the wielder will enter into a bloodlust focusing all their actions on the slaughter of the most powerful foe in the immediate area. This is not the same type of rage as a barbarian, for the hexblade will not be mindless. The still have all cognitive function, except that function is solely dedicated to spilling blood. When the blade is sutobly fed it ends its call and goes dormant for a while, dependent on quality and quantity of blood, it then wakes up and begins calling again.

When dormant the blade does not care what its power is used for. The warlock can uses its magic for anything. From stealing all the cheese in a town to constructing the most perfect ice sculpture of a horse. As long as it gets its blood it is happy.
