Session 15: Ball of the Dead
General Summary
The session opened in the grand yet foreboding Chapel of the Morning Lord within Castle Ravenloft, where the party huddled to discuss their early departure from Strahd’s lavish dinner party and ball. Saphira, driven by a personal quest, revealed her intention to slip into the castle’s catacombs to locate her own grave, convinced it held her long-lost armor and sword. To aid her, Dorian cloaked her in an invisibility spell, while Damien orchestrated a distraction by putting on a captivating performance with his hook horror homunculus, drawing attention away from Saphira’s stealthy descent.
In the shadowy depths of the catacombs, Saphira encountered an unexpected figure—a tomb robber searching for an amber-colored object. The woman was not hostile and engaged Saphira in a lengthy conversation, though she guarded her name closely. Strikingly, her speech mirrored Dorian’s cadence, prompting Saphira to mention him. The tomb robber’s demeanor shifted as she revealed having a son named Dorian, whom she had given up to her father years ago. Intrigued and cautious, she agreed to meet the party later in Vallaki, leaving Saphira with more questions than answers.
While Saphira navigated the catacombs, Dorian took his own risks, sneaking to the castle’s upper floors. There, he deftly recovered the party’s weapons and makeshift armor, securing their means of defense. The group reunited in the chapel, their mission partially accomplished but fraught with tension. Using Nimera’s gem, they teleported back to the relative safety of Bastion, materializing in Nimera’s chapel.
Their relief was short-lived. A dagger gifted to Saphira by Volenta, ominously etched with the word “Traitor,” suddenly sprang to life, plunging into Saphira’s back. The party swiftly destroyed the animated blade, but its dark magic had already taken hold. A curse within the dagger turned Saphira to stone
