Stonehill Inn

From the book ...

In the center of town stands a large, newly built roadhouse of fieldstone and rough-hewn timbers. The common room is filled with locals nursing mugs of ale or cider, all of them eyeing you with curiosity.

This modest inn has six rooms for rent. If the characters decide to stay here, it is 5 sp per room per night. Sildar Hallwinter takes one if he is with the party. See 'Food, Drinks and Lodging' in the rulebook for pricing. (The characters' other alternative for lodging is to camp outside the town, or to persuade a farmer such as Daran Edermath or Qelline Alderleaf to let them sleep in a hayloft.)

Description

(with map)

Outside
You arrive in front of a two-story building of modest proportions. You can see that it is newly built, made of local fieldstones and rough-hewn timbers. Over the door hangs a sign painted in garish colors where you can make out the words: Stonehill, Welcome. In the background, a roughly painted snow-capped hill finishes up the artwork.

Inside
The common room is typical of any inn in Faerun, nothing unusual as far as you can notice. A large bar takes center stage as your enter. The atmosphere is simple but cosy - a large fireplace to your righthand side has a roaring fire and heats the large room nicely. There is a long communal table at the far end of the room and another five simple wooden tables spread out unevenly across the space. Two closed doors on the far wall you assume leads to the rest of the inn's facilities and the stairs that lead to the second floor.

PEOPLE

OWNER
See Toblen Stonehill for all his family: Trilena, Pip, Maury and Phylla. Behind the bar, you see a young human male probably in his early thirties. He is of average height and build, brown short hair and grey eyes, with bushy eyebrows and two huge sideburns on either side of his cheeks. He sports a pleasant smile on his open face that makes his eyes crinkle slightly.

CUSTOMERS/STAFF/RUMORS

There are few customers in the common room enjoying the warmth and a few drinks (after a hard days' work). It is still early in the evening. You notice three people sitting drinking or eating at the bar and some of the tables.

Two men still dressed in their working clothes are sitting at a table not too far away from the fireplace and seem deep in conversation about the weather and what that means for the crops this year. (Old Farmer Narth and Miner Lanar). One seems much older than the other and they both have a tankard of beer in front of them.

Sitting at the long dining table on her own having a bowl of what looks like sweet-smelling soup is an older, fair-grey haired, very thin half-elf woman. She watched you as you come in, but is now intent on eating the rest of her dinner. (Weaver Freda)

Tending to the fire in the fireplace, you also see a young red-haired child of nor more than seven or eight. He is throwing a few logs in the fire and poking it.(Pip, Toblen's Young Son).

Two women move about the place tidying and cleaning the empty tables: one is a dark-haired girl of about 17, the other is red-haired in her mid-30s. Both smile at your party as you come in. (Gossipy Barmaid Elsa / Trilena, Toblen's Wife)

RUMOURS Spending a little time in the common room and chatting up the townspeople can provide the characters with a number of good leads to explore in and around town. NPCs present in the Stonehill Inn and the rumors they pass on include:

Narth, an old farmer: "Sister Garaele, who oversees the Shrine of Luck, recently left town for a few days, then returned wounded and exhausted." (See the "Shrine of Luck" section for more information.)

Elsa, a gossipy barmaid: "Daran Edermath, the orchard keeper, is a former adventurer." (See the "Ederrnath Orchard" section for more information.)

Lanar, a miner: "Orc raiders have been seen on the east end of Triboar Trail. The town master is looking for someone to run them off." (See the "Townrnaster's Hall" section for more information.)

Trilena, the innkeeper's wife: "Thel Dendrar, a local woodcarver, stood up to the Redbrands a tenday ago when they came by his shop and leered at his wife. The ruffians murdered him. Several townsfolk saw it happen. The Redbrands grabbed his body, and now his wife, daughter, and son have gone missing too." (Unknown to Trilena and the other townsfolk, the Redbrands took Thel's wife and children to their secret hideout.)

Pip, Toblen's young son: "Qelline Alderleaf's son Carp said he found a secret tunnel in the woods, but Redbrands almost caught him." (See the "Alderleaf Farm" section for more information.)

Freda, a weaver: "The Redbrands hassle every business in town, except for the Phandalin Miner's Exchange. They don't want trouble with Halia Thornton, who runs it." (See the "Phandalin Miner's Exchange" section for more information.)

These leads should point the characters toward opportunities for adventure in and around Phandalin. In addition, any NPC at the inn can tell the characters that the Redbrands frequent the Sleeping Giant tap house at the east end of town-and that the ruffians are trouble.   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homebrewed

Wines are not available - Toblen is waiting for a consignment of wines later on this year, but he is waiting for the Goblin menace to be eradicated as wines are very pricy goods to transport and lose.

FIRST FLOOR

  • A long stone-paved corridor traverses the whole length of the inn east to west and lead to a steep staircase upstairs at its western end
  • Off the corridor are the two doors to the common room
  • On the other side of the corridor, nearest to the stairs, you can find the storeroom
  • Next to the storeroom is a door leading to the largish kitchen
  • Last is a basic washroom (includes a tub)

  • UPSTAIRS

  • On the landing are a first set of two rooms (left and right) - A double and a single
  • Next is a large room with 3 singles and a table in the middle
  • Opposite the large room is a twin bedroom
  • At the end of the corridor on either side are two bedrooms: three singles

  • Note: Sildar would have been given the single room.

    ATTIC

Toblen and his family live in a suite of rooms under the coombs. His aged aunt Phylla is there all day long and looks after Baby Maury (1 year old) while Trilena and Toblen cook and help run the inn. She locks the door to the flat with a key for safety during the day.
