Session 26 Summary

General Summary

We resumed the adventure with our party members deciding to take a quick shopping trip in Trollskull Alley before heading over to the Waterdeep Wazoo. Stopping at Corellon’s Crown, they purchased several healing potions from Fala the Druid. They then proceeded to Steam and Steel, where both Hawthorne and Lunch made key investments in shiny new armour.

Having finally spent some of the reward money they’d been hoarding, the party then crossed the city to check in with Gaxly Rudderbust. The broadsheet office remained busy with coverage of the crackdown on the Zhendarim. Once they gained Gaxly’s attention, he relayed to them that his sources had reports of nimblewright sightings primarily in the Trades Ward, but also a few in the Dock and Southern Wards. Horus expressed his gratitude to Gaxly for the information and even gave him a small tip. They also discussed perhaps exchanging messenger birds to ensure easier communication between Gaxly’s office and the ‘wookerwy’ at Trollskull Manor.

With their search narrowed to roughly a third of the city, the party began an extensive investigation to track down their target. On the first day of the search, they encountered an elderly gentleman viciously berating his young apprentice. While the party tried to intervene on the distraught young man’s behalf, a failed Charm Person spell from Horus soon had the irritable old man shouting for the Watch, and our party members quickly making an exit. But throughout the day the still managed to successfully narrow down their search area.

On the second day, they encountered an odd-looking tall man in a heavy trench coat, despite the hot weather, who was selling savoy pies from the back of a cart. While most of his customers seemed satisfied with the product (some having ordered and consumed more than one), several of them were arguing with the salesmen about the contents of the pies, which he refused to reveal. Lunchmoney attempted to intimidate the man into revealing his secret and was unsuccessful, yet during the attempt Horus noticed the man's oddly awkward movement, and the party began to suspect he was more than he appeared. When Lunch then attempted to snip open the pieman’s coat fastening with his blade, he failed again and the aggressive action triggered a number of customers to intervene on the salesman’s behalf. The party once again thought it wise to leave the area before the city watch arrived.

Later that day, however, lady luck finally favoured our adventurers! The nimblewright detector they were using finally began to move for the first time! Within the next 30 or so minutes, they were able to triangulate the location of their target and soon found themselves at the opening to an alleyway with their device whirling and spinning at full tilt. Moving into the alley, they stopped in front of a large pile of debris, where they assessed that their target was hiding.

Encircling the pile, Hawthorne made an unsuccessful grapple attempt, after which the hidden nimblewright immediately revealed itself and launched into attack mode. A lengthy and challenging combat ensued that saw Lunchmoney struck unconscious and the party consume two of their newly purchased healing potions. At last, Horus landed the final blow that blasted the construct to the ground in a heap of smoking and clanking machinery.

In a satchel in the nimblewright’s possession, the party retrieved a roughly drawn map of Waterdeep, on which they saw an X marked within the City of the Dead beside the word “Cassalanter” written in an elegant script.
