Session 05 Summary

General Summary

The session opened with the party members looking for a place to rest. Upon climbing up a ladder, they strangely found themselves in the cellar of a brewer named Embry Pebblepot. After persuading him to calm down and giving him a gold coin, he agreed to let the party members rest in his cellar.   Following their rest, the party returned to the sewers to continue their search for the Xanathar hideout. They snuck into the hideout but failed to sneak past the sleeping guard, who they promptly murdered. Moving deeper into the facility, Lunch (barely) kicked open a door to reveal a Duergar trying to barricade a door while arguing with the bandit Krentz, who they’d encountered earlier in the Yawning Portal. The dark dwarf enlarged himself and attacked but was promptly slain, causing Krentz to flee the scene. As the party looked to move ahead, a Gray Ooze emerged from the lavatory and another short battle ensued. The party then moved to the main hall of the hideout where they found a muscular half-orc in dingy robes torturing Floon, while a hideous mindflayer looked on from a raised dais. Upon seeing the adventurers, it rose from its chair, set down its four-legged brain and left through a west door. Combat ensued, but a well-placed Sleep spell put both Floon and the half-orc to snoring, letting the party concentrate their efforts on the Intellect Devourer. After slaying the aberration, they tied up the half-orc and woke up Floon, who was very grateful for the rescue.   Having located the object of their quest, the party retraced their steps, emerged from the sewers and returned to the Yawning Portal, where they were greeted by an ecstatic and very appreciative Volo who quickly embraced his returned friend.   Unfortunately, Volo was not in a financial position to pay the reward he had promised. Instead, he offered the party the deed to a property in an area of the city called Trollskull Alley, which he assured them was worth much more. Eventually the party’s suspicions and disappointment were waylaid by Volo’s charm and good nature, and everyone proceeded to enjoy some food and libations before heading upstairs for a well-needed long rest.   But as they slipped off to sleep, each of the characters were visited by the Goddess of Magic, Mystra, who shared with them visions of the Past, Present and Future. Hawthorne relived the attack on his village by the orc raiders who killed his mother. Horus witnessed a failed summoning ritual by a group of cultists under a Waterdeep estate and recognized an old foe. Lunchmoney was shown a future showing the city of Waterdeep awash in flames and a skeletal dragon perched atop the Palace walls.   By accepting Mystra’s blessing, the party is now committed to seeking out and stopping the cultists to save the city.
