Thesmos Arcane University

Located on the island of Parthen, in the castle known as Thesmos, this University was founded hundreds of years ago by the wizard Scar as a gathering place for magical learning. According to the tales, Scar came to Parthen (then called Urchon) to fight an incursion of Aberrations from the Far Realm. After clearing out the Aberrations, Scar sealed the portal and earmarked the island for its remoteness to the rest of Faerin. He eventually returned to the island to found a school of magic in the Aberration's fortress. The school, Thesmos (which literally translates to "The Gathering") rests at the heart of the island atop an enormous mountain surrounded by jagged stone, accessible by ground only by traversing a labyrinth of ever-shifting magically-carved caves and tunnels.
It is known that Scar did not kill the Aberrations Second in Command a beholder named Dezozeki (Dez ō zē kē), but took it captive. For several years, he remained Scar's prisoner at Thesmos. But in time, the two became friends, and Scar made Dezozeki a professor of Forbidden Lore — a position he fills to this day. Unsurprisingly, Thesmosian Wizards are some of the most knowledgeable and effective wizards in the world when it comes to battling dark creatures with magic.
Thesmos has a reputation for being inclusive of wizards of any race, ethnicity, lineage and magical background, due to the fact that Scar has indicated he was an orphan and self-taught wizard. (though his true lineage is unknown, and seems to defy the lifespan of a single human). The requirements to join Thesmos Arcane University are based on acceptance of equality of the races and a desire to learn magic to defend faerin from invaders to the world. Students of Thesmos receive magical robes that grow with the wearer. These robes also change color as the student's knowledge increases.

Structure

• Headmaster or Headmistress: The highest position of staff at Thesmos, they are a teacher first and last. They are also responsible for supervising staff, building relationships with students, monitoring a school's disciplinary codes and perform administrative duties.
• Principal Librarian: In charge of the very extensive magical library stored at Thesmos. This position is considered as important as the Headmaster role and outranks all but the headmaster.
• Deputy Headmaster or Headmistress: Assists the headmaster in his duties. In the event of a headmaster's incapacitation, the deputy headmaster serves as a temporary headmaster until the Board of Governors can elect a new, permanent one.
• Department Heads: The title for a Professor at Thesmos Arcane University who is responsible for one of the eight arcane schools of magic. The Department Heads each specializes in one of the eight schools of magic. It is possible for a Department Head to serve concurrently as Deputy Head but not as Headmaster. The Eight Schools of Magic are as follows:
  • Abjuration: Spells that protect, block, or banish. An abjuration specialist is called an abjurer.
  • Conjuration: Spells that bring creatures or materials to the caster. A conjuration specialist is called a conjurer.
  • Divination: Spells that reveal information. A divination specialist is called a diviner. Unlike the other specialists, a diviner must give up only one other school.
  • Enchantment: Spells that imbue the recipient with some property or grant the caster power over another being. An enchantment specialist is called an enchanter.
  • Evocation: Spells that manipulate energy or create something from nothing. An evocation specialist is called an evoker.
  • Illusion: Spells that alter perception or create false images. An illusion specialist is called an illusionist.
  • Necromancy: Spells that manipulate, create, or destroy life or life force. A necromancy specialist is called a necromancer.
  • Transmutation: Spells that transform the recipient physically or change its properties in a more subtle way. A transmutation specialist is called a transmuter.
• Professors: Thesmos has in its faculty an abundance of wise and talented professors. Each a Master or Grand Master of the specific subjects they teach.
