Inspiration Overhaul

Inspiration, Inspired

Inspiration as presented in the dungeon masters guide is very limited as to what you can do with it. This aims to give it more uses in and out of combat. Listed here are some of the use cases for inspiration points:
  • Flashback. You have a "flashback" to something small, like a piece of information you forgot to note down.
  • Enemy's Roll. After an enemy rolls a saving throw against an effect you made, you can choose to make that enemy roll again.
  • Your Roll. As per the usual rules, you can re-roll an attack, ability check or saving throw.
In addition, a few extra ways of gaining inspiration are listed:
  • Character Development. If the character develops or grows during a session and it is reflected in a characteristic change, then an inspiration point may be rewarded.
  • At Death's Door. When a character falls unconscious and starts rolling death saving throws, the player may describe a past experience "flashing before your eyes". It should be something most of the group doesn't already know about, such as a moment from the character's backstory.

Lore Inspiration

A new type of Inspiration that can be earned at the beginning of each session, is the Lore Inspiration. Shortly before the previous session recap, the GM may ask the party one question, and whoever gets the question right first, earns Lore Inspiration, unlike standard inspiration, Lore Inspiration expires at the end of the session if the player does not use it. When a player decides to use their Lore Inspiration, they get to add or remove 2d6 to any roll that they see fit, be this a damage roll, attack roll, or saving throw.

Author's Notes

Personally, I'm not a fan of how inspiration is handled in the DMG, so this is my expanded system. If you have any questions or ideas regarding this system, feel free to leave a comment.
