Language Guide: Affectionate Nicknames

The Pocket Void has peolpe from so many different cultures that expressions, Idioms and slang can become confusing. This series of articles is ment to help newcomers understand these things better.

In this article we will be going over Affectionate Nicknames. While we will be including as meny as possible, some Nicknames are unique to individual relationships.

These Nicknames could be used for family, friends, or partners.

ANGEL: used for someone considered beautiful inside and out. Comes from the common term for heavenly beings.

BABY/BABE: Can be used in both close romantic relationships or for a more casual nickname for someone you are dating.

BESTIE: Often used for someone considered a best friend, or particularly close friend.

DARLING: Used in many Earth parallels, it originates from an Old English word for favorite.

DEAR: Often used as a form of address at the beginnings of written coraspondance. It has come to mean someone you charish.

DOLL/DOLLFACE: Used to say you are beautiful, this nickname has fallen out of favor in a lot of worlds, who wants to be compared to a child's plaything.

HABIBI: Coming from the Earth language of Arabic this translates to My beloved.

HONEY: Dating back to the Middle Ages on many Earth Parallels, it compares someone to the rare and sweet food. Can be shortened to Hon. (Sometimes used as general form of address)

LIGHT OF MY LIFE: A fairly self explanatory nickname. They are the brightest part of your life.

LOVE: A nickname that clearly states that you love someone. (Keep in mind some people use Love or Luv as a more general form of address)

MATE: Usually used for close friends, it is often connected to seafarers because of the term "Shipmates" however anyone can use it. (Can also be used as a general form of address)

MON PETIT CHOU: From the Earth language of French meaning My little cabbage. It is used in a similar manner to My Darling.

MY MOON AND STARS: Tells the person you love that, you value them like you value the moon and stars. They are the light of your life.

PUMPKIN: Another orignating from the Middle Ages and their parallels. It like other food based nicknames, compares the person to a valued and sweet foood.

SCHATZ: From the Earth language German, it means Treasure.

SQUIDBRAIN: While usually used as an insult, it has been used as a more affectionate nickname. Coming from Pyrea [WoF-15] it seems specific to this world.

SUGAR: A sweet high valued food the nickname Sugar, comes from Middle Age Earth parallels. It is still commonly used in more modern areas

SWEETHEART: Originating from Middle English in the 16th century it is used to equate the heart to the center of love and joy. Used throughout the Earth parallels.

Pay attention to tone and context, some of these are occasionally used sarcastically. Inversely some insulting nicknames can be used affectionately.
