Rune Hunter

Rune Hunters are a division within the Artifact Collectors. They specialize in using ancient languages when looking for missing artifacts.

They will often focus on one language or the lost languages of one world. They work together to translate newly redicovered languages.

Focus and Responsibilities

Like all Artifact Collectors Rune Hunters search for and collect lost Artifacts. Their specific focus is on lost languages. Translating inscriptions on the collected artifacts, and in the locations where the artifacts were found. Collectors find the Artifacts, Hunters help us understand them.

They are the ones who search through Ancient documentation to try and discover the location of an artifact. They work with the Archivists to gather an preserve both the original documentation and the translations.

A basic understanding of Magic and Booby Traps is also helpful.

Qualifications

A Rune Hunter needs to have strong knowledge of linguistics, how languages work. They need to have as complete a knowledge as possible for the culture the language is from. They need to be able to read the writing, well enough to recognize symbols and what they stand for.

The biggest difficulty for Rune Hunters comes from the fact that Extraction deals with so many worlds. Meny of these worlds have multiple lost languages. Some of those languages only known examples are found on the artifacts. Alot of written lost languages translate into a dead speaking language. So from there they need to be translated into a language that is currently spoken. Then from there they are translated into the primary language of that world.

Risks

Like any of the jobs connected to Extraction there are inherent dangers associated with Rune Hunting.

Booby traps, of all kinds, from poison darts to magical curses. Every Rune Hunter should watch for trip wires and any unusual magical readings.

Unstable ruins, it does no good to avoid all traps if you end up collapsing part of a ruin on top of yourself. Be aware of damage to structural supports. Things like Rotten or crumbling floors and missing steps.

Even after an artifact is recovered it may take time to translate any inscriptions, this is done in Artifact Storage, were an artifact can be studied in a controlled environment. Though care must still be taken as artifacts can be fragile or dangerous.

The Rune Hunters are an integral part of Artifact Collecting.
