The Fall of Arcanum

A war raged between the ancient cities of Arcanum and the Gods themselves.
The Gods, fearing that mortals had grown too powerful and would soon turn against the Gods, unanimously decided to bring an end to mortal life in order to start again.
Mortals had grown powerful enough to rival the Gods, they had begun to exhibit control over creation itself and were almost able to match the Gods in destructive power. The Gods saw all this as the Empire of Ikan waged its conquest, once they had dominated the cities of Arcanum they would next turn to conquer the Gods.
And so a calamitous war was waged over the Material Plane, the divided cities of Arcanum were no match for the might of the Gods and fell one by one. In less than a year the great floating cities of Arcanum were no more. The Gods had intended to wipe out all mortal life from the Planes but not all the peoples of Arcanum sought to conquer, some stayed loyal to the Gods. Upon arriving at the Great Elven City of Vir’thelgos, the Gods raised it to the ground but found it mostly evacuated with those loyal to Selene fled underground. In The Great City of Maran the Gods found only loyal followers who welcomed their arrival with prayers and offerings.
In an act of mercy the Gods spared the city of Maran, the followers of Selene and all those faithful to the Gods. In a compromise the gods destroyed only the most evil and corrupt, bringing each empire to ruin, and instead of destruction the army of the Heavens left the Material Plane, never to return.
The Gods cut off all physical ties to the Material Plane and the mighty Hecate used her primordial might to weaken the weaves influence on the mortal world forever cutting off the ability for mortals to reach the highest echelon of magics at the cost of the Gods never being able to directly affect the Material Plane ever again.
Thus the Divine gate came to be a magical barrier that encircles the material plane, barring the Gods from being physically able to influence the mortal world and limiting the power of magic.
