Under circumstances he doesn't know, Rot was abandoned near a 'monastery' like structure high in the Cliffkeep Mountains as a very you Goblin, only able to remember his name. He was brought in out of the freezing cold & snow, nurtured back to health and eventually raised by the residents. In truth the 'monastery' is home to a secret warrior/assassin society of psionic individuals, called the Invisible Hand, led by a Drow man named ______. After years of training, he helped to manifest those psionic abilities within Rot. (Basically raised by the Ra's Al Ghul of psions) It was then that he changed his own name to Rot, the Brain, thinking he must be the smartest goblin in Exandria. Rot was taught to move through the shadows, how to use his mind as a weapon & to kill without remorse on command. The leader always told everyone that the people they killed were traitors to humanity, guiding the world through their unseen actions. Politically or otherwise well connected & important people all of them, and each one died to the lethal minds of the Invisible Hand, who leave no trace behind of how their target died.
The Invisible Hand is almost universally treated as an urban legend by those who have even heard its name. Only true conspiracy theorists & those who've had direct dealings with them in the past believing in the group's existence. The stories of assassins killing with their minds sounding too absurdly farfetched for most people, let alone them trying to shape the world through their actions.
Roughly 3-6 months ago, his home was attacked by a group of unknown assailants, who brought enough numbers with them to overwhelm the small society. Its surviving members forced to flee, scattered to the winds, they now live in secret among regular society. Rot fled far to the south, finding a new home working freelance for a den of thieves in Kymal. His race & psionic abilities keep him distanced from working directly for them, but he gets enough odd jobs tossed his way to keep from starving. (Could just as easily be any other location closer to where the party is at the time) His little time with the society was enough to unleash the psionic talents within Rot & they continue to grow despite not having formal training anymore, manifesting new, terrifyingly lethal abilities over time.
**Special Note** This would be a story of hopeful redemption, coming from a place of pure dark & finding the light in normal life outside the small society in which he lived for so long. He didn't know any better with regards to his actions before, everyone around him was doing this without question, so he followed suit.
