  • The arm grants +2 Constitution, however 1/5 of total HP comes from the arm, which needs repairing rather than to be healed. The arm takes 1 pt of dmg out of every 5 pts sustained. (first 4 pts go body, then 5th goes to the arm) Becomes disfunctional, rather than being totally destroyed, once it reaches 0. Repair DC = 10 + 1 for every 5 pts of dmg sustained by the arm & takes 10 mins per pt of dmg repaired. Removing his arm temporarily lowers his max hp.
  • When submerged in water, the arm immediately malfunctions & cannot be repaired until it dries completely. Repair DC = 14 & takes 1 hr.
  • Normal failure Repair Check doubles the repair time & materials cost, Natural 1 quadruples the repair time & materials cost (always leaves him with an arm again eventually, even when he 'fails' on repairing.)
Gambling Variant Option - for longer periods of gambling similar to hours of downtime activity without having to roll every hand
  • Players set forth a maximum amount they're willing to risk for each 'session' of gambling before rolling. A 'session' is equivalent to 1 hr of gambling, if playing longer multiple rolls will be required, re-evaluating maximum stakes each time.
  • If playing heads-up against a single person - An opposed Intelligence (Gambling Set) check. Determine payout based upon the difference between the two rolls & stakes being played for.
  • If playing at a table with multiple players - Intelligence (Gambling Set) check with a DC based upon average skill level of other players at the table. Determine payout based upon the level of success or failure (above or below the DC) & stakes being played for.

Shadow is a member of a secret group dedicated to the complete eradication of anything relating to firearms, called (the Seekers). (The Seekers) are based out of Whitestone originally, but its members scour the globe in search of any relic of Percival's horrific invention, though these days such finds are truly rare. Originally formed by Lady Vex'alia when the world joined together to ban the creation & use of gunpowder, the group now functions mostly as Tal'Dorei's secret police. But his story began long before he was a Seeker.

Shadow is all too familiar with the devastation that can come from blackpowder, an innocent victim of an explosion caused by a pipe bomb as a child (age 8), his left arm was torn off at the shoulder. He survived only because of a group of healers from the local Temple of Sarenrae, but his arm had been blown to pieces & couldn't be reattached. His parents tried desperately to find any way to heal their maimed child, taking him to numerous temples to no avail.

Eventually, years later, they heard of an inventor from far off Whitestone that might be able to help. What they didn't know was that in his sleep, Shadow had been approached by an entity in his dreams. The dream asked only a single question - "What would you do to get the function of your arm back?" already knowing Shadow's answer before he admitted it aloud "Anything!" It was the very next day that his parents heard about Percy. Shadow couldn't believe it, but he didn't ponder the possible ramifications of what had occurred.
(I envision this as Percy's demon, back for round 3 at fucking with his life tangentially. It saw an opportunity to corrupt another soul through Shadow's bitter resentment for those who maimed him, while simultaneously twisting the fates to integrate Percy in that corruption process.) **Also totally willing to scrap this for a new reasoning for his Warlock lvls. I wasn't originally meaning to make a clone of Percy, but accidentally ended kinda close based upon the multiclass abilities I discovered** Seeker missions provide plenty of opportunities for corruption.

At 20 years old, Shadow was sent to Tal'Dorei with an escort befitting an emissary (lent by his distant relatives), 12 of the finest soldiers Ank'horel could muster. Among the escort, his eldest sister, Rain was personally tasked with ensuring his safe return once his new arm had been completed & Shadow was fit to travel once more. The travel took months, first across the Ozmet Sea to Emon, then by horseback from there to Whitestone. The creation process, including intricate clockwork in many places in addition to the countless hydraulics, took nearly a year of working side-by-side with Percy to 'finish' the new arm for Shadow. Getting used to it was something else entirely, requiring another 2 years of regular practice using the mechanical appendage, then making more adjustments. In the end, it functions as seamlessly as if it were a real arm in most circumstances, including heavy rain, though submerging it in water causes it to malfunction until it can be fully dried. (subject to other limitation possibilities)

It was during those 3 years that Shadow first learned of the Seekers' existence & mission. Joining their ranks was a calling he could not resist, despite his sister's constant reminders that they must leave one day once his arm was completed. He convinced Percy to hide him, telling his sister that he had run away in the night shortly before they were to return home, so that he could remain behind to follow his heart & end the existence of firearms / blackpowder once & for all. Now 23 years old, Shadow began training with the city guard, discovering an early knack for using a new clockwork crossbow developed in Whitestone that includes a clip & auto-drawing bow string (requiring less intricate use of his mechanical hand than a traditional one). For 5 years he trained diligently, studied the histories that the Seekers use to hone in their search and tinkering whenever he had free time. He worked on the many ideas he'd had as a child, but lacking the dexterity to see them completed had only dreamt of until then. And then the day came for him to take the Oath of a Seeker, vowing to spend the rest of his days wiping firearms / blackpowder & their creation from the face of Exandria.

**SPECIAL NOTE** - I see Percy taking this on as a redemption project, someone he can go above & beyond to help, as a 'poster boy' of his efforts to change the past. I also see the two of them having a very interesting relationship from Shadow's perspective, who receives his healing from the very hands that created the means of his initial maiming. Science led to his pain, but it also delivered his salvation from that pain.

THE STORY HE TELLS -
He's a traveling collector of oddities & information, just a wandering Tabaxi in search of the next intriguing object that catches his eye. He has family in the distant land of Marquette, but when he grew up the time came for him to go his own way & form his own family, with the impression this is just how Tabaxi work where he is from.
(Technically a vague truth that helps cut down on suspicions without giving any details about his mission as a Seeker or his family's real connections. There are still obvious holes in the story to anyone who spends any amount of time with him, starting with the noble demeanor & mechanical arm he struggles to hide, but those are a regular problem for him regardless. He usually ends up dropping the ruse once he is sure someone hasn't been sent by his family to drag him home, if for no other reason than he can't keep it up.)

  • Shadow will not abide innocent people becoming collateral damage, turning on those who cannot or will not adhere to this attitude towards life. Only when it is completely unavoidable & every other opportunity to minimize harm has been taken, will Shadow forgive someone who causes bodily harm to an innocent person in order to achieve their goals.
  • The world would have been better if blackpowder had never been discovered.
  • Live life to the fullest every single day, because you never know what tomorrow will bring or if you will even see tomorrow.

  • Outlawed & hidden knowledge has a seductive appeal to it, if only to better understand those who imposed their will over that knowledge.
  • As with most nobles, views the majority of laws as applying to the masses, while nobles are able to bend them within reason, so long as they have 'justifiable cause' to do so. (A view that has gotten stronger in his time around Percy in particular - "Do as I say, not as I do" attitude of being the only adult in the room at all times)

What's a few coins compared to already losing his arm, especially back when he had the coin purses of a noble? The stakes aren't always coin either, he's a gambler even with his life at times.

  • Prefers to sleep off the ground - lofted beds, hammocks, up trees, etc are all preferable to being solidly on the ground, anywhere he can feel like he has a perch to peer down from.

  • Always uses full first names, including any proper titles of noble station when speaking about others. Nicknames are reserved for blood relatives & those closest friends that could be considered family.

Hygiene

Always very well kept, Shadow bathes as often as possible while adventuring & balks at any duty that will involve getting intentionally dirty, such as traipsing through sewers, or walking long distances in the rain on muddy roads. While he has been hiding his true family connections, he still gives off an air of nobility in his physical presentation.

Contacts & Relations

  • Lord Percival DeRolo - One of the few people who Shadow deeply respects on an intellectual and a social level. Despite the age gap & mentor / student relationship, he's one of the few people Shadow would call a friend, mostly due to Percy never viewing him as incapable & only ever striving to re-enable him in life, above & beyond the new arm.
  • Lady Vex'alia DeRolo - A friendly rival on the archery field & a constant guiding presence in Percy's life, which consequently guided Shadow's.

Choosing to stay as far out of family matters as possible, denying any knowledge of his whereabouts to anyone who inquired after his initial 'disappearance'.

  • Mother - Beauty of Summer's Eve (Summer), Age: 59 - Stay at home mother, kept busy with 9 children over the years. A strong matriarch who kept a tight grip on her domain, the household. Even Quill deferred to her on matters pertaining to their home life. Babied Shadow more than anyone. 
  • Father - Swift Quill Scratching Across Parchment (Quill), Age: 65 - A savant of fine antiquities who seems to know at least a little something about nearly everything that ever makes its way to his shop, assuming he hasn't seen that exact piece before already. In his later years, he is still involved in the business, but has handed the reigns over to Hawk at this point. Treated Shadow with borderline contempt, unable to hide his pity for the maimed son who would never amount to anything.
  • Brother (Eldest Sibling) - Nimble Hawk Diving Through the Sky (Hawk), Age: 39 - Raised as the successor to Quill in running the family's business. Studied hard & solemnly accepted his duty as 1st born son, now in charge of all final sales decisions. Shadow & Hawk were always friendly enough during the extremely rare occasions that Hawk had time to spend with his baby brother. 
  • Sister-in-Law (Hawk's Wife) - Esra Basaran, Age: 36 - The human daughter of one of the other minor noble families in Ank'horel, an arranged marriage to maintain both families' status in the city. She despises that she was married off to a Tabaxi family. The connection has brought little to the family beyond title, which rankles Hawk, causing further tension between him & Esra. They had no children the last Shadow knew, with no indications of any in the near future.
  • Brother (2nd Eldest Sibling) - Feather Twirling in the Wind (Feather), Age: 38 - Jealous of Hawk's prominent position within the family, the two have always feuded & Feather has strived to be better than Hawk at everything to do with the family's business in hopes of one day being given his chance to take the reigns. Feather's scheming attitude toward getting ahead in life always rankled Shadow. Between that & the similar amounts of time Feather spent focused on business as Hawk did, Shadow spent the least time with Feather of any of his siblings. 
  • Sister-in-Law (Feather's Wife) - Eclipse of the Moon (Eclipse) - The Tabaxi daughter of a wealthy merchant whose connections have bolstered the family's business greatly, though their union was as much about affection as it was convenience. It is one of many small 'victories' Feather sees as having over Hawk. She was pregnant with a 2nd child when Shadow left for Whitestone.
  • Niece (Feather & Eclipse's 1st child) - Sky Full of Stars (Star), Age: 9 - Was still an infant when Shadow left.
  • Sister (3rd Eldest Sibling) - Rain in Summer Turning the Dust to Mud (Rain), Age: 35 - In many ways a second mother to all of the younger siblings, especially Shadow, she was always a bit of a spinster with no real desire to leave home. Regularly charged to help Shadow whenever Summer was busy. Escorted Shadow on his journey to Whitestone in search of a new arm & remained there with him during the years it required to be completed. Lying to her in order to get away from returning was one of the hardest things Shadow ever had to do, which is why he had Percy do it for him. Other than their mother, Rain was the biggest culprit of babying Shadow in his eyes, constantly offering to do things that he felt he should be able to do for himself. Other than his twin brother, Rain was the family member who spent the most time with Shadow.
  • Sister (4th Eldest Sibling) - Defiant Snowflake on a Spring Morning (Snow), Age: 34 - Living up to her name, Snow was always the rebel of the family. She never had any interest in staying put to work in a "musty furniture store" (her words, not his) or be married off to some other noble. Comes home on occasion, but spends much of her time traveling the world now. Snow's rebellious spirit & confident bravado made her into Shadow's hero growing up, idolizing the life he imagined her living through the stories she brought back to him growing up. 
  • Sister (5th Eldest Sibling) - Stout Honey Droplet (Honey), Age: 30 - Annoyingly infatuated by the noble lifestyle, Honey wanted nothing more in life than to marry rich & keep living a luxurious life. Her whole adolescence was driven towards becoming the perfect wife for a noble. Honey never had time to bother with the black sheep of the family, almost universally ignoring Shadow's existence except when directly asked about him in public. 
  • Brother (Twin Sibling) - Jade Leaf Among the Fall Colors (Jade), Age: 29 - Technically born an hour before Shadow, the two of them were inseparable until the explosion. After that Jade became a constant reminder of what he would never be able to accomplish physically, mirroring his own face back at him still fully able to live a normal life. That underlying bitterness never stopped Jade from being one of the best brothers someone could ask for.
  • Sister (1st Younger Sibling) - Winter Breath of Fog (Winter), Age: 27 - Eager to grow up quick, Winter always hung out with older kids, wishing she wasn't one of the youngest in the family. Her efforts were perpetually hampered by an innocence & naiveté that makes her age readily apparent. 
  • Brother (Youngest Sibling) - Little Thunder Clap at Night (Thunder), Age: 26 - Known as 'Boomer' to the younger siblings (up to Shadow & Jade) for his penchant to burst into the middle of things with total disregard for protocol or manners.

Religious Views

  • Science gave him a hand & his capability back, where the Gods failed to answer his family's prayers for years.
  • He no longer wants his arm back through divine means. If Regenerate is ever cast upon him involuntarily, he will become infuriated & likely never forgive the caster of the spell.
  • Other healing spells will still be appreciated & he certainly has no desire to remain dead if it isn't necessary, but his appreciation for the gifts of the Gods will be hard earned, his gratitude going instead to the individual channeling their powers.

With any noble upbringing comes a modicum of social grace & etiquette that is instilled right from birth, but Shadow in particular has had to rely on his wits, gut instincts & ability to talk himself out of situations on numerous occasions.
