Titanomachy Myth in Exalted Greece | World Anvil

Titanomachy

Kronos so feared his own children that one by one he devoured them so that they could never supplant him. But this angered Rhea , who sought to help her children, and she fled down to the isle of Crete to bear their son Zeus. Zeus escaped the fate of his siblings with his mother’s help, and Kronos swallowed only a stone wrapped in an infant’s blankets.   Zeus secretly roamed Creation gathering allies among the Sidereal Exalted, who wished to cast off the overbearing demands of their patron.   In time Zeus grew older and overthrew his father with the help of the Elder Kyklopes. The Kyklopesgave him thunder and lightening with which to fight the Titans. Zeus gathered his allies on Mount Olympus. The Titans gathered their strength on Mount Oryths. A great war was fought that shook earth and the heavens, but the decision hung evenly in the balance. The might of the Titans withstood the power and multitude of gods that had been born this past age, but not being able to launch their own assault.   Two of the Titans, Metis and Prometheus, defected and joined Zeus, because they felt that he was cleverer than Kronos and would prevail. It was they who provided Zeus with the counsel to appeal to the Solar and Lunar Exalts. The Sidereal Exalted worked their magics and struck an alliance with their Celestial brethren, also bringing forth the Terrestrial Exalts whom had multiplied over the many generations of man. Metis lured to the siblings Helios, Selene, and Eleos to help free the Hekatonkheires from Tartaros to fight against the gods. Prometheus gifted the Exalts with magics and technology capable of wounding and defeating titans.   With their forces gathered, and three of the Titans distracted, the gods sent the mortals to assault the Titans. The Titans seeing these toys of the gods daring to challenge them, rode forth to utterly crush the Exalts. The first strike was made by the Terrestrial Exalts who sundered the body and soul of Menoetius. The Lunars were next taking down Hekate, and Pallas. Last came the Solars whose overwhelming might slew several more Titans. The gods then joined the fight causing the remaining Titans to retreat and eventually surrender. Having thus won victory, the gods cast lots for the sovereignty, and to Zeus was allotted the dominion of the sky, to Poseidon the dominion of the sea, and to Hades the dominion of the Underworld. Prometheus withdrew from Creation departing for parts unknown.   Those who were slain had fallen through the Underworld, into Tartaros, and with their massive size and power tore a hole through its deepest depths creating a new reality know as the Abyss. Here they could not truly die, nor could they truly live. Their bodies in a constant state of flux, their souls suffering the trauma of death again and again, but with their minds intact able to absorb their fate and torment. These poor souls became known as the Neverborne.   Those who surrendered were cosigned to Tartaros. There were 2special cases with these prisoners. The first was Atlas, the mightiest of the Titans whom Zeus feared would rise up and free the Titans from their prison. With him the Sidereal Exalts separated his soul and body. His soul was cast into Tartaros, while his body was tasked to hold up the sky. Then there was Kronos. Zeus himself sliced open his father's body, tore his siblings out and sized the soul and cast it into the Abyss, and set the body to forever hold the entirety of creation upon its mindless back.   Helios, Selene and their sister Eos were also imprisoned, a slight which their chosen did not take lightly.   Zeus became the patron of the Sidereal Exalts, taking the position of his father as Lord of the Gods. Eventually he would disperse this power among his greatest children: Ares , Artemis , and Hermes . While deciding who to grant the last portion of Sidereal Exalts to, Aphrodite caught his eye and in an attempt to win her love he gifted her the the shards of his father. These gods would become known as the Majesties, those who guide Creation.   As a check to prevent another war among the gods, Gaia divided her power among the gods. To Poseidon she granted control of the element of Water. To Demeter she granted the power over the living world symbolized by Wood. Hades who now dwelt in the Underworld was granted Earth. To Apollo, his swiftness was enhanced with command over Air. Lastly, to the god of forges, Gaia granted Hephaestos command of Fire. These gods alone were gifted with the ability to always rise from death, and became known as the five Elemental Phoenixes or the Phoenea. A balance of power must be maintained between them lest Creation be ripped apart and cast back into the Wyld.   With the blessings of Gaia diminished, the world scarred, almost the entirety of mortals destroyed during the war, and new rulers of the Heavens, the Golden Age drew to an end.
