Cultural Significance
The Emperor is the ultimate power inside the Middle Kingdom, and the ruler over all. His word is law and everyone who says otherwise is a traitor, for who death is a merciful of punishment. The former Emperor Xiong Jiang was a tyrant, oppressed his people, stealing food out of their mouths. That is when the Failed uprising started. Like the name states it failed, but not much later Xiong Jiang was killed by his own flesh and blood, the current Emperor Xiong Gaunting.
Harem
An Emperor has a harem, which means multiple wives. There is only one Empress, and the rest are consorts and concubines. All the women have their own palaces, and their status rises or falls when they have the favor of the Emperor. The use of a Harem is to strengthen alliances and have a fast growth of the Emperor's bloodline.
